Stable Isotope Conservation Forensics

Applications are invited for appointment as Post-doctoral Fellow/Senior Research Associate in the Baker Laboratory (www.thelifeisotopic.com) in the School of Biological Sciences to commence from September 2023 (or soon thereafter) for two years, with the possibility of renewal.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in ecological, environmental,  geo-sciences, or related discipline. They should have a demonstrated publication record of question driven science. The ideal candidate possesses a toolkit comprised of a solid foundation in conventional stable isotope methods ranging from bulk to compound specific approaches and their data analysis..

The candidate will be based within HKU’s SIRMS laboratory on the main campus in Pokfulam. SIRMS is an open-access service laboratory that currently houses a wide range of instrumentation covering the analysis of light elements and their isotopes (C,N,S,O,H) using various peripherals including elemental analyzers, gasbench, GC, and laser-based technologies, in addition to affiliated instrumentation with laser ablation ICP-MS for trace/heavy element analysis. SIRMS operations are managed by a Senior Technician.

The hire will lead a new project to develop a rapid stable isotope test to differentiate ivories sourced from modern elephants and prehistoric mammoths in an effort to identify mislabeling fraud within the world’s largest ivory market. There is sufficient scope for the hire to explore other research in the area of conservation forensics (e.g. differentiating captive vs. wild caught species of conservation concern) marine ecology, or other areas of mutual interest. In addition to their research duties, the hire will be expected to supervise graduate and undergraduate research, assist with SIRMS operations including methods development and promotions, and publish their work.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.

Applicants should send a completed application form, together with an up-to-date C.V., a cover letter and contact information for at least two references by e-mail to dmbaker@hku.hk Application forms (341/1111) can be downloaded at http://www.hku.hk/apptunit/form-ext.doc. Further particulars can be obtained at http://jobs.hku.hkCloses June 30th, 2023.

The University thanks applicants for their interest, but advises that only shortlisted applicants will be notified of the application result.
