Job Description

We are re-advertising a position for a highly motivated researcher to lead a modeling study of extreme weather events over Singapore using the newly developed urban-scale weather and climate model at the Center for Climate Research Singapore, CCRS (http://ccrs.weather.gov.sg/index/) which is part of the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS).

The successful candidate is expected to apply and evaluate the performance of the 100 m urban model known as uSINGV to simulate extreme rainfall and wind events in Singapore. uSINGV is developed by CCRS in collaboration with the UK Met Office and other members of the Unified Model (UM) partnership. The research work includes selection of extreme and high-impact weather cases (with heavy rainfall and strong winds), consolidation of observational data for use in model evaluation, model improvements needed for high resolution applications, setting up numerical experiments and evaluation of simulations, presentation of results at conferences/meetings and writing of progress reports and scientific papers. Developing a suitable methodology to properly evaluate high-resolution simulations with observations will also be an important task.

Successful candidates must have a PhD in a related field, ideally obtained within the last 6 years, relevant modeling experience, ability to work with large datasets, ability to work well with others and independently, and excellent technical, organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal to disseminate key results to the academic community, project partners and government stakeholders. The position will be based in the urban climate lab (http://www.nusurbanclimate.com/) of the Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore, NUS (http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/geog/) which is among the top 5 Geography Departments according to the latest QS World Rankings by Subject. This will be a collaborative project with CCRS and will also involve scientists from the UK Met Office and its UM partners. The research outcomes will help CCRS in its vision to be a world leading center in tropical climate and weather research focusing on the Southeast Asia region.

The position is available now and approved for an initial two-year period and will remain open until a suitable candidate has been selected. To apply, please send a 1-page cover letter, full CV together with names and contact information of three references (including the PhD supervisor) via email to Dr Matthias Roth (geomr@nus.edu.sg). Applications submitted before 7 April 2023 will receive primary consideration. The position will remain open until a suitable candidate has been selected.
