Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering

Applications are invited for a very dynamic Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 to work as part of our European Project GOOD with Dr Dimitrios Argyropoulos's Team at UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering.

GOOD is a 4-year project aspired to create and evaluate Agroecological Weed Management (AWM) systems. Weeds negatively affect the sustainability of EU farming systems with weed management relying to a large extent on herbicides. The reduction of herbicide use and risk has become major policy targets of Farm to Fork strategy, aiming to promote agroecology and the transition to sustainable and resilient farming systems. The use and combination of cover crops along with several cultural practices, the use of beneficial microorganisms and digital tools will be assessed towards the agroecological manipulation and management of weeds and the increase of crop productivity and farmers' income.

The successful candidate will work on the Digitalization of Agroecological Weed Management systems. The applicants must have an understanding of drones and their applications in agriculture and knowledge of basic software and programming languages (e.g., MATLAB or Python), computer vision: image data capture and processing, multivariate analysis and machine learning tools.

Salary: 42,033 - 48,427 per annum

Appointment on the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Closing date: 17:00hrs (local Irish time) on 6th June 2023

Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 17:00hrs (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.

UCD do not require assistance from Recruitment Agencies. Any CV's submitted by Recruitment Agencies will be returned.

The PD1 position is intended for early stage researchers, either just after completion of a PhD or for someone entering a new area for the first time. If you have already completed your PD1 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD1, or you are an external applicant whose total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 4 years, you should not apply and should refer to PD2 posts instead.
