This is an exciting time to join the University of Southampton. As a founding member of the prestigious Russell Group, we have a global reputation for delivering world-class education, research and enterprise that makes a real impact on society’s biggest challenges. These challenges are broad and complex, and with the impact of the pandemic to contend with, it is more important than ever that we work creatively to reaffirm what matters most to us as a diverse community.
The role
This is a diverse role within Careers, Employability and Student Enterprise. A key aspect will be providing a daily Ask the Adviser service to students and graduates. This will involve confidently and accurately assessing students’ needs and providing appropriate referral to activities, information, advice and guidance.
You'll contribute to our broader student-facing activities, including individual and small group workshops and talks. Working closely with other Careers Information Advisors and Careers Consultants you will actively develop new, or improve existing career learning activities for students.
You'll be expected to build successful working relationships with key partners such as staff within faculties and other professional services, as well as support additional projects designed to enhance the ongoing development of Careers, Employability and Student Enterprise. Current projects within the team include developing our online presence and co-ordinating the Career Mentoring Programme.
The role is offered on a full time, fixed-term to cover maternity leave until 12 July 2024.
About you
This post presents an exciting opportunity for an efficient and exceptionally motivated individual who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment supporting clients on a day to day basis.
You do not need a qualification in careers guidance, however experience of working with clients in an advisory capacity or coaching role is essential. You will have strong written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills and the ability to work well within teams. Time management, organisational skills and data analysis are also requirements. You will be able to apply good judgement and take a creative approach to problem solving. A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and experience in using databases is required.
What we can offer you
As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work.
With a generous holiday allowance as well as additional university closure days we are committed to supporting our staff and students and open to a flexible working approach.
