The Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs (Bell School) is a world-leading centre for research, education, and policy analysis on international and Asia Pacific politics, security, diplomacy, and strategic affairs. The School comprises a number of vibrant, interdisciplinary, intellectual communities: the Department of International Relations, the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, the Department of Political and Social Change, and the Department of Pacific Affairs.

The Department of Pacific Affairs (DPA) is a vibrant research unit, comprising over 20 academics and some 35 PhD students, situated in the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs. DPA is the leading international centre for applied research into contemporary governance issues in the broader Pacific. In addition to its scholarly goals, DPA maintains a strong commitment to active engagement with policy communities in the region and Australia.

DPA is the lead partner in the consortium delivering Pacific Research Program – Phase 2 (PRP II). Co-funded by DFAT and the consortium partners’ parent bodies, PRP II (2022-26) will generate and disseminate independent Pacific-focused research as a regional public good, and support stronger evidence-based policy making in the Pacific by working to foster stronger research practice and deeper research-to-knowledge engagement.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Departmental Manager to lead in the implementation of our many and varied research projects, outreach activities and education offerings. This role involves managing multiple projects with conflicting priorities and timelines and communicating effectively with diverse audiences to ensure projects are delivered on time and to a high standard. The Departmental Manager will report to the Department Head and work closely with the Senior PRP Manager, other DPA professional staff and college staff.

In this role, you will:

  • Contribute to DPA’s budget management, in close collaboration with the PRP Senior Program Manager, including for ANU and external funding sources, and provide reliable budget information to DPA’s leadership team.
  • Manage the implementation of a range of DPA research education and outreach activities, in collaboration with the PRP Senior Program Manager, at a high level, acting as the conduit between executive and the broader professional staff team.
  • Provide support to Department staff to respond to requests from external stakeholders, including government, the donor community, Australian and regional parliaments, the NGO community, consulting agencies, managing contractors and the media within Australia and the region;
  • Provide inputs into program design, particularly in relation to their accordance with ANU operating policies and procedures;
  • Draft various DPA-specific business documents such as grant applications, bid and tenders documents, providing feedback to the authors as needed; and
  • Communicate clearly with partner institutions regarding various ANU guidelines and policies, payment timelines, financial reporting requirements, and research ethics best-practice applicable to them.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will show close attention to detail, have relevant qualifications in project management, Pacific politics or capacity building and demonstrated experience in foreign aid, university systems, project and financial reporting. To excel in this role you will also have extensive experience in working within diverse and dynamic teams to manage research projects from design and implementation through to reporting, monitoring and evaluation.
