Short Description

The Institute for Adult Learning (IAL), an autonomous institute of the Singapore University of Social Sciences, is at the forefront of building capabilities and continuing professional development for an effective, innovative and responsive TAE sector.

The IAL Research Division aims to provide a strong knowledge base for the development of practice in CET. It seeks to ensure that the development of policy is informed by research and up-to-date knowledge of international and local best practices. The division also enables research in Singapore by facilitating projects and building research capability amongst practitioners. It also serves as a conduit for funding and commissioning research in the CET sector. Through practitioner engagement and partnerships, it works to build a vibrant research culture.

Job Description

In this position, the appointee will report to the Principal Researcher and work in collaboration with Project Managers of research project(s) to conduct research in the areas of lifelong learning and workforce development, with a particular focus on technology, to contribute to knowledge and insights that can shape policy and practice.

The responsibilities of the Research Associate include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Contribute to the design, development and implementation of specific research projects including:
    1. Prepare and plan research project logistics, schedule and activities.
    2. Review, collate and analyse literature and findings;
    3. Assist in the design of research instruments and analysis;
    4. Data gathering, processing and cleaning in preparation for data mining and analysis;
    5. Analysis and research writing in required formats (reports, papers, articles); and
    6. Manage the bibliographies and literature review of the research reports
  • Plan and conduct engagement activities with the research team and stakeholders to support the intended outcomes of the research projects
  • Manage and maintain the research databases as required
  • Contribute to the writing up and reporting of research activities as required.
  • Assist with the evaluation of tenders for approved research projects.
  • Plan, manage and implement research events including seminars, visiting speaker engagements, focus groups and research related travel.
  • Any other duties, including cross-divisional projects or events, that may be assigned by the management from time to time to meet the needs of the organisation and changing environment.

Job Requirements

  • A degree in the humanities/arts and social sciences. Preference will be given to candidates with a graduate research degree.
  • At least 3 years of work experience, preferably in the relevant research or policy areas, such as research experience related to organisations, education systems, digital disruption, work and learning and/or working experience that requires consideration of these issues.
  • Sound analytical skills and a strong interest in development as a researcher in the field of adult and continuing education.
  • Good report writing, communication, administrative and project management skills
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team  
  • The successful appointee will be based in IAL Campus located at Lifelong Learning Institute at Paya Lebar.
