About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

Utilization of carbon-free fuels, in particular hydrogen, is currently of high interest for combustion in gas turbines. However, the high reactivity compared to natural gas challenges traditional flame stabilization strategies and poses increased risk for unwanted dynamic phenomena, such as thermoacoustic oscillations. The successful candidate will be responsible for modeling the susceptibility of hydrogen flames to unsteady perturbations in industry-relevant configurations, characterized by complex geometries and flow patterns. The work is to be conducted in close collaboration with accompanying numerical and experimental tasks. High-dimensional simulation and measurement data will be analyzed with the aim of developing physics-based models for the flame’s response to acoustic and hydrodynamic perturbations. This will allow for a more accurate assessment of the combustor’s susceptibility to self-excited oscillations resulting from thermoacoustic feedback.

The Thermo-fluids Group at NTNU has built significant expertise in combustion dynamics and combustion of carbon-free fuels, on the
experimental as well as on the modeling side. The present PhD project with focus on modeling will be closely linked to ongoing experimental and numerical activities.

Your immediate leader is Associate Professor Moeck, with Head of Department as responsible for you as an employee.

Duties of the position

  • Analysis of experimental and numerical data provided by project partners
  • Investigation of acoustic-flow-flame interaction in industry-relevant combustor configurations burning hydrogen
  • Development of physics-based models for the response of hydrogen flames to acoustic and hydrodynamic perturbations
  • Communication of research results through international conferences and peer-reviewed publications

Required selection criteria

  • You must have a professionally relevant background in engineering, physics or applied math.
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program: https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phiv
  • Strong background in fluid dynamics, acoustics and combustion.
  • Excellent command of the English language (oral and written).

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant 

Preferred selection criteria

  • Experience in stability or response analysis in a thermo-fluids context.
  • Proficient user of Matlab, Python or similar for data processing.
  • Skilled in academic writing as evidenced through archival publications.

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years without duty work.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Engineering https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phiv within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
