Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 or 2 within UCD School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy
UCD Centre for Irish Towns (CfIT) has recently been awarded funding for a research project called Vacancy Map Ireland (VMI): Development of an open geospatial data model for vacancy using proxy datasets, GIS and AI. CfIT now seeks applications for a Postdoc Level 1 or 2 post.
The post will be based on the UCD Campus. The post will be based on the UCD Campus. Flexibility in terms of remote working within the island of Ireland and less than full-time may be possible. The post will initially be for a period of 6 months followed by an extension to end of 2024 (aligning with the structure of the funding). There is potential for a further 36 months dependent on success in future phases of the funding call. The first phase is 6 months and as the funding is only released to UCD per phase this job advert can only state a period of 6 months. However, all phase 1 projects automatically qualify for phase 2 (to end November 2024). The successful candidate would ideally start in summer 2023.
Project summary:
Addressing Ireland's high vacancy rates is a core pathway of the Government's Housing for All policy and critical to meeting carbon emissions reduction targets. Numerous incentives have been introduced but implementation is based on incomplete and fragmented data. We don't understand the scale, distribution and nature of vacancy, despite this being an objective of government policy since 2002, most recently in the Vacant Homes Action Plan 2023-2026, and a requirement of Ireland's Strategic Environmental Assessment for the European Commission. Vacancy Map Ireland (VMI) is a unique open geospatial data model for vacancy that will adapt, localise and enhance an existing State of the Art solution from Philadelphia by assembling proxy datasets in a GIS; integrating Artificial Intelligence technologies and location-based verification; and applying a new taxonomy for vacancy. VMI will address identified challenges and risks such as fluidity of data and data privacy; engender a digital transformation in public services that supports informed and efficient progress on public policy; and strengthen engagement between citizens, communities and government for societal good. The experienced UCD-led, trans-disciplinary team represents the quintuple helix, and will develop VMI within budget and timelines by applying the CRISP-DM methodology.
