NexSys - "Next Generation Energy Systems" The decarbonisation of the Energy System will play a vital role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and help mitigate the impacts of Climate Change. The technical and societal challenges inherent in decarbonisation are set to be enduring challenges of the mid-21st century and ones that will require a whole of society approach, encompassing academia, industry, government, and citizens.
NexSys is a newly established All Island SFI Strategic Partnership Programme focussed upon the transition to a net zero carbon energy system. It is a unique partnership bringing together a multidisciplinary research team, industry, and policy makers to tackle fundamental research questions to be addressed as part of the transition to net Zero. Hosted by UCD Energy Institute, NexSys brings together academics from nine institutions across the Island of Ireland (UCD, TCD, DCU, ESRI, Maynooth University, UCC, NUI Galway, Ulster University and Queen's University Belfast) to work together to meet the unprecedented scale and complexity of the challenges associated with the energy transition.
This is an academic research role, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training and development under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.
The primary purpose of the role is to further develop your research skills and competences, including the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications, the development of funding proposals, the mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

Project Details: Transition to commercial vehicle electrification policy (TR3):
This research will examine the uptake and use of EVs in the commercial fleet. With heavier vehicles and longer average travel distances, the requirements, and attitudes of businesses to EVs are different compared to private car owners. Which economic sectors are most likely to be fast or slow in transitioning their vehicle fleets or purchased transport requirements to zero carbon options? What policy incentives and initiatives can encourage the transition to zero carbon commercial transportation services? To answer these questions, the project team will develop a database for analysis of commercial vehicle traffic across Ireland and survey SMEs on attitudes to electric vehicles. The Project team will produce an integrated georeferenced database linking transport infrastructure, road traffic, sectoral economic activities, key demographic indicators, and metrics of power system capacity, decomposable by region and county.
In addition to the Principal Duties and Responsibilities listed below, the successful candidate will also carry out the following duties specific to this project:
- Develop a georeferenced database integrating information on travel patterns of commercial vehicles, local economic activities, demographic information as well as transport and energy infrastructure networks as a core part of the research programme for TR3.
- The postdoctoral fellow will work as part of the NexSys team and be at the research facility of the UCD Energy Institute. The role will allow for some flexibility in hybrid / virtual arrangements, but the successful candidate will be expected to work onsite at UCD at least halftime. They will also be a member of the School of Economics.
Salary Range: 42,033 - 42,621 per annum
