You will join our friendly team to work on the development of silicon photonic circuits and devices.

You will work in the world leading Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and will have access to the world class facilities and dedicated researchers that this provides. The Telecommunications Systems Laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for experimentation in photonic systems and provides direct access to the UK’s National Dark Fibre Facility, a unique geographically distributed transmission facility dedicated to research, linking together four top British universities.

This position is part of research initiatives funded by the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the UK government. The project will develop practical linear and nonlinear optical devices that will be used for the processing of communication signals. The research will involve the design and application of new integrated component structures, the characterisation and manipulation of the properties of waveguides written in new materials, as well as the design and execution of demonstration experiments.

To be successful, you must have a strong background in photonics (and communications, preferably) with extensive practical experience of working with waveguide devices and optical fibres. You will have a good understanding of nonlinear optics and their applications. You will also have experience in characterising the properties of novel photonic components. Experience on modelling of photonic devices is also desirable.

You must also have proven skills in the critical evaluation and interpretation of data and of working as part of a collaborative research team. You must hold a PhD* or equivalent qualification related to fibre optics or photonics. Previous postdoctoral experience is favoured but not necessary.

You will be integrated fully into the group and conduct research both independently as well as with other members of the team and our external collaborators. You will help with the supervision of PhD students and contribute to the ORC’s open and rich research environment.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
