Together, we are driven to be thoughtful, practical, and purposeful in all we do. Taking this combined approach is what makes our work matter. It’s the reason we’re one of the top 50 universities in the world and a member of Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight. If you want a career where you can thrive, be challenged, and do meaningful work, you’re in the right place.

At UNSW, new educational initiatives are constantly being developed in the PVCESE for implementation in the Faculties and Schools, while many innovations introduced by individual academics, Schools and Faculties have potential for institution-wide application.

The Nexus Program will provide a critical missing link between organisational units at UNSW, connecting faculties to each other and to the PVCESE to develop and implement coordinated solutions to challenges in education and student experience.

Why Your Role Matters:

The Nexus Fellow for the School of Clinical Medicine (SoCM) will be an academic staff member dedicated to educational excellence and improving the student experience at UNSW. The appointee to this prestigious role will be expected to lead and influence colleagues and processes in SoCM to successfully drive educational excellence and adoption of new educational practices at the university through collaboration with the Pro Vice-Chancellor Education & Student Experience portfolio.

This position will have three key areas of focus:

  • Educator development: this will include developing a wide range of professional development of clinical teaching including peer support and mentoring of teachers.
  • Enhancing assessment practice in the clinical environment, with an emphasis on programmatic assessment
  • Enhancing work-integrated learning experiences

The Nexus Fellow will report to the Head of School with a dotted line to the Faculty Senior Vice Dean, Education, and work closely with the School Director of Teaching.

Responsibilities:

As a Level B:

  • Work with colleagues and students within the school to identify major areas for improvement and enhancement of learning in the clinical environment.
  • Provide support to colleagues’ professional development in pedagogy through facilitating Faculty and UNSW programs and initiatives and communicating emerging teaching practices.
  • Identify educational practices within the school and faculty for broader adoption, communicate these to the PVCESE, and if appropriate, work on their further dissemination.
  • Work with relevant staff and stakeholders in the SoCM (and across the Faculty of Medicine and Health) to develop innovation in assessment practice within the school.
  • Contribute to the design and development of experimental approaches to teaching in a clinical environment.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, other Nexus Fellows & the EF community to implement new institution-wide initiatives that seek to improve learning and teaching, and development of solutions to current educational challenges.
  • Contribute to the UNSW Education Co-op (opening in July 2023) by providing advice and guidance to colleagues (approximately one day per month).

As a Level C (in addition to the above):

  • Play a significant role in and contribute to colleagues’ professional development in pedagogy, through educational technology, emerging teaching practices and scholarly approaches to teaching by leading Faculty and UNSW programs and initiatives. This includes professional development of the honorary affiliated titleholders (mainly conjoints) associated with the SoCM.
  • Lead the development of innovative approaches and processes to teaching and learning in a clinical environment, providing insight in the evaluation of these innovations.
  • Demonstrate leadership and positively influence educational culture and community in the School and Faculty.

You will have:

Level B:

  • Postgraduate clinical and education qualifications and experience relevant to the position.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills, including the ability to influence others and drive change.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design, development, and delivery at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
  • Experience using and/or designing with educational technologies and online delivery methods.
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence (e.g., relevant discipline-based curriculum design and development at a variety of levels and scales).

Level C (in addition to the above):

  • Evidence of professional development of teaching practice in self and others with the ability to advance and lead an inclusive culture of excellence in learning and teaching.
