About the Role

The University of Melbourne is in search of a highly motivated postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering. The position is part of the Moonshot Research and Development Program funded by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). The program is focused on "Liberation from Biological Limitations via Physical, Cognitive and Perceptual Augmentation."

The project's goal is to record intravascular encephalography (EEG) in the transverse sinus to decode visual semantic information close to the visual cortex. As a Research Fellow, the candidate will be responsible for conducting pre-clinical EEG recordings in sheep while they are shown different visual stimuli. The position entails surgery, sheep management, equipment setup, recording sessions, data analyses, and neural decoding method application. It also involves regular animal care and experimentation, which may require work outside of standard business hours. The role may require independent travel to Japan for 1-3 months each year to collaborate with partners at Osaka University.

The successful candidate will be responsible for publishing the research results in conferences and journals. The position may also entail minor teaching and research supervision duties in related areas of research.

Responsibilities include:

  • Contribute towards the research effort of the team and develop research expertise and deliver against research objectives in a timely manner.
  • Under the guidance and support of Senior Academic staff, conduct internationally competitive research resulting in publications in high impact journals.
  • Undertake occasional teaching, tutorials, marking and laboratory duties as required by the Department/School.
  • Engage with relevant professional and industry bodies and stakeholders to foster collaborative partnerships.

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented postdoctoral Research Fellow to join a cutting-edge project focused on pushing the boundaries of biological limitations through physical, cognitive, and perceptual augmentation. In collaboration with partners at Osaka University, this role presents an excellent opportunity for personal and professional development and the chance to make significant contributions to groundbreaking research.
