Located in Suzhou, China, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a young, dynamic and EMI university founded in 2006, and is a unique collaborative institution and first joint-venture university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees for more than 100 programmes. XJTLU also aims to become truly research-led and has committed significant investment into research development and the expansion of master’s and PhD student numbers on campus. The Department of Applied Linguistics is a research-intensive environment with two MA programmes: the MA in TESOL and MA in Applied Linguistics (with a Specialisation in Multilingualism), which also contributes a Linguistics pathway on four UG programmes. We also have a Language and Cognition Research Laboratory, for Psycholinguistic and Phonetic research, with eye tracking technology.

Linguistics at XJTLU is a rapidly expanding area — with ambitions to become the leading center of Linguistics teaching and research in the EMI context in the region, we are seeking a leading full / senior associate professor who will help to lead the department’s research and internationalisation agenda. The research area is left open, but applicants who can complement our existing strengths are particularly welcome. We particularly welcome applications from candidates interested in interdisciplinarity and collaboration within the Department and School. Please see https://www.xjtlu.edu.cn/en/study/departments/academic-departments/department-of-applied-linguistics/ for details of our existing colleagues and research strengths, which include Sociolinguistics, Multilingualism, Discourse Analysis, Corpus Linguistics, Cognitive Linguistics, and Psycholinguistics.

The appointee will be expected to take a leading role in mentoring staff members in their research and initiating collaborative projects. The appointee will be expected to lead large external funding grant applications. The professor will also be expected to demonstrate teaching excellence and contribute to the academic administration of the department, school and university. The candidate will have an excellent research record, for example marked by publications in SJR Q1 journals, SSCI/AHCI-indexed journals, books with leading presses etc.

In terms of teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to supervise PhD students, MA Dissertation students, as well as teaching one module per semester on our PG or UG programmes.

Staff typically teach 1-1.5module(s) per semester, depending on student numbers. The typical contact hours are around 6 hours per week. The typical split of teaching: research: service is 40:40:20.
