Job Purpose

The Associate Dean of Research at Khalifa University’s College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), provides overall administrative leadership and policy development and implementation for many medical student administrative and support functions, including admissions and recruitment, grades and records, student organizations and interest groups, activities and events, student health and wellness, and career counseling services.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Strategic Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the formulation of the CMHS’s strategy, as well as annual academic and administrative plans for Research.
  • Contribute to development of the CMHS’s policies and procedures, adhering to the overall objectives of Khalifa University, ensuring alignment to applicable regulations and standards and promoting of leading practices and educational excellence.
  • Contribute to the development and management of the department budgets; monitor the performance of budgets and report on a timely basis to ensure that divergences are addressed promptly.
  • Manage and mentor staff of the department

Operational Responsibilities

Leadership for developing and maintaining CMHS educational programs:

  • Provides leadership for the CMHS Office of Research
  • Supports CMHS accreditation processes and its program of continuous quality improvement
  • Works with the Dean, Associate Deans and faculty to plan, develop, implement, assess and improve courses, programs and services that support the College’s missions
  • Ensures that medical student programs and services conform to laws, regulations, and policies of the United Arab Emirates

Research

  • Work with the Khalifa University’s SVP for Research and Development to develop and refine the strategy for the Research and contribute towards the formulation and implementation of overall research strategies and plans to enable the achievement of the University’s vision and objectives.
  • Oversee the successful implementation and management of the CMHS Research Centers
  • Manage, enhance and grow CMHS Research activities and overall impact through the development of knowledge, human capital and technology solutions.
  • Ensure that all Research Programs are aligned with the University’s policies, procedures and applicable regulations.
  • Oversee the quality of awarded research and provide improvement mechanisms.
  • Work with the Dean, Associate Deans and Khalifa University’s Office of Research Support to promote and support student research activities
  • Supports and mentors office faculty and staff who participate in research

Administrative & People Management

  • In consultation with the Dean and Associate Deans, actively works with the Office of Human Resources to recruit and retain high quality faculty and staff for the office.
  • Manages faculty and staff by defining job expectations; plans, monitors, and appraises faculty and staff performance; coaches, counsels and actively participates in the departmental employees’ on-boarding, mentoring and professional development.
  • Schedules and assigns faculty workload allowing for an appropriate mix of participation in the College’s academic, clinical, research and service activities.
  • Communicates the College’s and University's strategic goals and new policy developments to employees of the department.
  • Recommends promotions, salary adjustments and other personnel actions to the Dean and Associate Deans.
  • Provides information or prepares reports as and when needed.

General

  • Ensures adherence to the University's information security policies and procedures, and reports breaches or other security risks accordingly.
  • Ensures coordination with other departments to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks and responsibilities, as and when needed.
  • Performs any other tasks assigned by the Dean and his line managers.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provide coaching, guidance and mentoring as required to enhance the internal capabilities of the team and ensure the achievement of established objectives and plans.
  • Recommend appropriate training courses as per the pre-determined training needs, evaluate their effectiveness, and monitor their results.
  • Carry out performance appraisals for subordinates according to planned schedules and recommend necessary actions as per the applied practices.
  • Conduct periodic meetings with subordinates to ensure that priorities are clear and workflow is running smoothly.
  • Follow-up on employees' administrative affairs such as vacations, leaves and other administrative and related affairs.

  • MD and/or PhD in a relevant field of study
  • Qualified for faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or higher
  • Completed at least seven years of relevant academic experience, with at least two years in an administrative academic role.
  • Significant leadership experience

  • Associate or Full Professor with a minimum of 8 years of responsible education related experience in leading and successfully managing educational programs in a university including 5 years of teaching experience at the level of Associate or Full Professor in higher education.
  • Strong record reflecting excellence in education, clinical practice, and/or research.
  • Proven management experience, requisite expertise in working collaboratively with faculty members and medicine professionals, strong interpersonal skills, and a thorough understanding of university structure and culture are essential.
  • Demonstrable ethical behavior, professionalism, interpersonal skills, leadership and management abilities that are sufficient to effectively direct and develop staff and students.
  • Familiarity or experience with an education institution in the Middle East will be viewed favorably.
