Environmental and Life Sciences

The University of Southampton is a research-intensive University, with an annual research income in excess of £120 million.  Research and Innovation Services (RIS) are recruiting a Research Funding Officer in the Research Funding Development team to support that success and to provide academic and research colleagues, expert advice, and assistance in research funding (UK/international) and bid support.

The role

We’re looking for Research Funding Officer to work alongside our Schools and academics in this key position. Of graduate calibre and a proven track record of making things happen, you’ll advise and guide researchers (especially those new to securing external research funding) on the UK research funding landscape, schemes and application process with the view to develop high-quality proposals. Astute and highly motivated, you will call on your project management experience and knowledge of research funding to support Schools in maintaining their track-record in securing research funding.

About you

Prospective candidates will have excellent organisational and communication skills, relevant project management experience, and the ability to work confidently and assertively with academic, professional services colleagues and funders, using negotiating and influencing skills to achieve successful outcomes.  An understanding of the research lifecycle and funding landscape are important for this role.  Training and coaching will support the technical aspects of this role.

Working here

As a university, we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and we are active in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work.

We welcome applications from candidates who are committed to helping us create an inclusive work environment. We encourage applications from candidates from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities, people who identify as LGBTQ+; and people with disabilities. Committed to supporting our staff and students, we are open to a flexible working approach. We give full consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly and those who have taken a career break.  We have adopted a hybrid-working model across the university combining working from home with regular time on campus.

As well as additional benefits, such as a generous holiday allowance of 30 days annual leave, plus a further 6 university closure days and 8 UK bank holidays.  We will support your long-term future with access to a pension scheme, subsidised health and fitness facilities and a range of discounts. We are committed to supporting our staff and students, and are open to flexible working approaches; giving consideration to part time applications.
