Our Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FMD) offers international excellence in research and teaching and supports clinical service for a population of unrivalled ethnic diversity in East London and the wider Thames Gateway. We are at the forefront of medical research and education, with research themes in cancer, cardiovascular medicine, inflammation, trauma and population health. Organised into 6 separate institutes, the faculty is ranked 2nd in the 2021 QS World University rankings for research citations and consistently positioned 1st in London for subject rankings and student satisfaction. 

Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, and one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers.  Barts Health and QMUL have collectively invested £1.3bn in creating new hospitals and over £300m in state-of-the-art research infrastructure since 2012. The NIHR Barts Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) is a clinical/academic partnership between Barts Health NHS Trust and QMUL that brings 6 million patients together with outstanding science and enables ground-breaking discoveries to be translated into life-saving treatments. 

We now seek to appoint an ambitious and engaged clinical academic in Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery to lead and develop our basic science programme. The post is the first in the Bone & Joint Health group and is an exciting opportunity to lead a programme of research as part of the research portfolio of the BRC and pursue clinical work in Barts Health NHS Trust. You will contribute to the intellectual life of FMD as well as the research field of Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery as part of the BRC. You will make positive contributions to student education and experience through curriculum development and the delivery of teaching in the subject area of Orthopaedics. You will be a full member of the Orthopeadic team at Barts Health, working across all three hospitals undertaking specialist foot and ankle elective surgery as well as participating in trauma on call.

You will be a Foot and Ankle Surgeon, and an established or emerging clinical academic leader with strong national networks and a clearly defined research programme. You will have a strong publication record including at world-leading level. You will have experience of applying for and securing external research funding, with ambitions to build and lead a research team focused on their specialism and to provide intellectual direction. You will need to demonstrate an ability to maximise opportunities for public engagement and income generation and help to develop new alliances with external partners and stakeholders. You will have previous leadership experience and proven ability to engage with and mentor junior colleagues in developing their research, publications, and career opportunities. 

This role is positioned within the Blizard Institute, one of the largest institutes within FMD, with personnel of c360, financial turnover of c£60 million per annum; and research expenditure of over c£20 million per annum. The Blizard is a world class biomedical research institute that integrates all stages of research from basic science through to clinical studies across a diverse range of fields including genomics, cell biology, translational immunology, neuroscience and trauma.
