We’re looking to appoint a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual as a Workshop Technician. The post holder will work in the Faculty of Engineering & Physical Science Engineering (FEPS) production and training centre to provide professional technical support to students and researchers. 

You will have the skills for the fabrication of bespoke scientific and engineering apparatus whilst also delivering high quality, precision engineering solutions. You will be an effective team player and be able to adapt to a broad range of duties and challenges.

The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Surrey is built on the core engineering disciplines of aeronautical engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, electronic engineering and mechanical engineering together with the core scientific disciplines of computing, mathematics and physics. Within these fields the Faculty enjoys a reputation of excellence in research and teaching. The Mechanical Workshop produces high precision components and equipment plus repairs and modifications to existing equipment for research and teaching activities across the Faculty.

Working alongside the workshop team, you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge of the majority of machine tools within the workshop and their applications, and you will assist with providing technical support, advice and solutions to staff, students and external clients.

You will be responsible for the development and construction of high precisions components and apparatus for teaching and research, from drawings, sketches and verbal instructions provided. You will also assist in the design of products and advise on the practicality of manufacture.

With good communication and customer skills, together with experience of problem solving to support customers for equipment malfunctions, you will work within our well established processes and procedures bringing your technical and working knowledge to assist students in the design and preparation of equipment.

Once established in the role you will have the opportunity to provide practical training of up to 250 undergraduate students per academic year in the theory and use of Engineering workshop machine tools, welding and fabrication equipment.
