The Research Training Group “Mineral-bonded composites for enhanced structural impact safety” (GRK 2250), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), offers a position as

Research Associate / PhD student (m/f/x)
on the topic of Analysis and Evaluation of the Sustainability Nexus of Reinforcement Measures with New Composite Materials
(subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)

starting as soon as possible. The position is limited until April 30, 2026, subject to resources being available. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz-WissZeitVG). The position aims at obtaining further academic qualification (e.g. PhD).

Tasks:

  • independent and cooperative qualification, as well as technical training on Sustainability Assessment (SA), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC), Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA), and resilience in the built environment through a combination of independent and cooperative learning approaches and literature review
  • contribute to the advancement of the Resource Nexus from the perspective of the doctoral project
  • working in collaboration with other GRK project’s members (fellow students and supervising professors) as well as colleagues at UNU-FLORES and within the UN System
  • implementing the planned research program; evaluating and interpreting the results; transferring the findings to a GRK internal exchange platform; elaborating and presenting the state-of-the-art in various research areas
  • participating in lectures, workshops, and summer schools according to the guidelines of the GRK curriculum
  • supporting scientific graduation work (Bachelor/Master/Diploma) in the subject-specific research field
  • regular reporting on research progress to the supervising professors
  • publishing the results of the research work both individually and in collaboration with others
  • cooperative maintenance of data-sharing platforms (database, informational web pages, etc.)
  • summarizing the results of the PhD project in a dissertation within the due time of 3 years.

Requirements: 

  • very good university degree in one or more of the following areas: business administration, economics, engineering (in particular, civil/structural), sustainability studies and environmental sciences
  • experience in two or more of the following: sustainability assessment methodologies, resilience evaluation, cementitious composites, and structural impact safety
  • strong interdisciplinary desire to learn and willingness to cooperate
  • very good verbal and written English communication skills
  • unwavering determination to submit the dissertation after 3 years of research.
