The Department of Translation sets out to provide an education in bilingual and cross-cultural studies which can nourish graduates with written and spoken competence in Chinese and English as well as capacity to think independently and globally. One of its central features is the equal emphasis on translation as a profession and as an academic discipline. Another feature is the importance attached to the socio-cultural environment of the Chinese and English languages. The appointee will be required to conduct research in translation studies, and teach or co-teach one or more of the following courses: English through Subtitles, Culture and Translation, Literary Translation, and Translation Theories, Legal Translation, and other core cluster courses. Excellent command of written and spoken Chinese and English is a must. Applicants may be invited to take a written test. The Department invites applications for Research Assistant Professor specializing in translation studies, and preference will be given to those with international publication records, competitive grant records, and remarkable research potentials.
General Requirements
Applicants should (i) possess a PhD degree in translation studies; (ii) be able to teach courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in translation or interpreting effectively; and (iii) be able to publish research output with international impact. Applicants should provide information about their work experience, qualifications, research interests and achievements, and a statement of research grant and publication records.
The appointees will (a) teach courses at undergraduate and / or postgraduate levels; (b) participate in independent research programmes and research grant application pursuit; and (c) perform certain administrative duties as assigned by the Head of the Department.
Appointment
The conditions of appointment will be competitive. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee.
Appointments will normally be made on fixed-term contracts of up to three years, which, subject to review and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointments with possibility of consideration for substantiation.
