Special Information

The College of Health and Human Services invites applications for the Director of the Doctor of Medical Sciences (DMSc) program in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies, College of Health and Human Services at Northern Arizona University-Phoenix. This is a full-time (12-month) associate/full clinical professor beginning June 2023.

The Director will work with the Department Chair and NAU Online to develop an online, asynchronous program with the mission to provide PAs with knowledge and competencies to contribute to an equitable, patient-centered, and cost-effective health care system.

Job Description

The Director is responsible for the leadership and administration of the Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) program which includes oversight of the student experience (recruitment, admissions, graduation), faculty and staff recruitment and retention, quality of education and delivery, and faculty development. The Director will work closely with Department leadership on strategic planning, growth, and creative initiatives.

As faculty in the College, the Director will provide instruction in the doctoral curriculum, advise doctoral students, oversee culminating experiences, engage in scholarly or creative projects, and provide service to the institution and professional community.

The Director will be responsible for:
  • Collaborating with the chair and faculty in delivering a high-quality, evidence-based, health systems science-focused curriculum
  • Participating in department-level strategic planning
  • Interacting and communicating with diverse populations
  • Fostering the mission, vision, and values of NAU
  • Adhering to all FERPA requirements for the program
  • Completing all administrative duties required for an academic program
  • Ensuring compliance with policies and procedures of a graduate program at NAU
  • Fulfilling responsibilities of a non-tenure track faculty member at NAU

Minimum Qualifications

For all ranks:
  • NCCPA-certified PA
  • Successful completion of doctoral degree in health care-related discipline by position start date
  • Minimum of 5 years' relevant clinical or other health care-related work experience
  • Experience teaching coursework in or related to the field of health systems science (social determinants of health, population health, clinical informatics, health care finance and delivery systems, etc.)
  • Experience teaching in an online health care-related / clinical degree program

Assistant Clinical Professor (all the above, and)
  • Minimum of 3 years' relevant clinical, health care-related, or academic work experience

Associate Clinical Professor (all the above, and)
  • Administrative experience within a PA or health care-related educational program
  • Minimum of 5 years' relevant clinical, health care-related, or academic work experience
  • Previous or current academic appointment at rank, or academic record equivalent to associate clinical professor or higher

Full Clinical Professor (all of the above, and)
  • Leadership experience within a PA or health care-related educational program
  • Previous or current academic appointment at rank, or academic record equivalent to full clinical professor or higher


Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the current landscape in PA and health care education, the clinical environment, and emerging trends.
  • Knowledge of the current landscape in health care (value-based care, quality and safety, finance and delivery)
  • Experience working with faculty, students, and colleagues in a diverse, equitable and inclusive learning and working environment
  • Administrative experience within a PA or health care-related educational program
  • Leadership experience within a PA or health care-related educational program
  • Experience managing an online health care-related / clinical degree program

Northern Arizona University has a student population of 29,569, including approximately 21,000 on its main campus in Flagstaff and the remainder at more than 20 locations statewide and online.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. This is an Administrative Faculty (ADF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); 22 days of vacation, sick leave accruals, and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Administrative Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable annually according to the terms of offer. Upon completion of the administrative assignment, employees will return to the faculty role, renewable according to the Conditions of Faculty Service. Academic year (9 month) faculty do not accrue vacation. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election.
