The University of Macau (UM) is an internationalized public comprehensive university in the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) located at the west bank of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The Department of Chinese Language and Literature of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) invites applications for the position of Full/Associate/Assistant Professor of Chinese Language and Literature. We are seeking candidates with qualifications and willingness to excel in teaching, conduct impactful research, and provide service to the Department and the University. The candidate should be prepared to work for editing and publishing for the academic journal “South China Quarterly” led by the Institute of the Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (IAS).

Department of Chinese Language and Literature

The Department of Chinese Language and Literature is one of the oldest and strongest departments at the University of Macau. The streams of Chinese Literature and Chinese Linguistics are identified as key development disciplines by the university. Our faculty showcase areas of expertise nearly in all fields of Chinese Literature and Chinese Linguistics and obtain doctoral degrees from highly-renowned universities around the world. The Department offers an undergraduate degree in Chinese Language and Literature. At the graduate level the Department hosts two MA programmes in (i) Chinese Linguistics and (ii) Chinese Literature. The Department offers PhD degrees in either (a) Linguistics (Chinese) or (b) Literary Studies (Chinese).

Institute of the Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences

The Institute of the Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences is an academic unit established under the University of Macau with the aim of building a university-level, cross-faculty research platform to help the UM develop world-class inter-disciplinary research teams in humanities and social sciences. The Institutes organizes academic events and activities for promoting exchange and collaboration. It houses an editorial team for publishing the academic journal “South China Quarterly”, which is an interdisciplinary journal focusing on humanities and social sciences.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a PhD degree in Chinese Language and Literature or related areas. Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience at the tertiary education institutions, sustainable research outcomes, and a commitment to provide service to the Department and the University. The successful candidate is expected to serve as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of South China Quarterly and manage the production of the publication according to the university’s development direction. Extensive connection with the editorial circles or bodies would be desirable.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in 2023 or as soon as possible.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting MOP828,100 (approximately USD102,230) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
