Lecturer in Global Cultures and Interdisciplinary Education

Job description

We are seeking a lecturer in Global Cultures and Interdisciplinary Education, with an interest and experience in online pedagogies. A PhD in a relevant field within the Arts & Humanities or Social Sciences and a experience of teaching and academic administration in higher education are required. The ability to teach in a global context across at least two of the following areas would be an advantage: race; gender; migration; belief and religion; cultural identity. 

 

This appointment will join the Liberal Arts Department and will play a pivotal role in expanding online educational offerings related to the online   Master’s in Global Cultures, supporting its expansion as a leading interdisciplinary programme in Arts & Humanities. This role will also play an important role in developing out King’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Executive Education (EE) offerings. 

 

The MA in Global Cultures enables students (especially those in professional or employment contexts) to engage with concepts and practices addressing contemporary global challenges, (in)equalities and action for inclusion in global contexts and diverse workplaces. 

 

Alongside the contributions to the Global Cultures programme and its future developments, the post-holder may also be involved in aspects of the Liberal Arts Department and providing pastoral support to undergraduate students. The post-holder may also be required to contribute to compulsory, co-taught modules of the Liberal Arts undergraduate programme, which underpin the interdisciplinary ethos of the programme. Therefore, a strong commitment to and experience of interdisciplinary education and scholarship is highly desirable. 

 

Commitment to and experience of various forms of online teaching and learning, pastoral care and supporting student wellbeing is highly desirable. As part of the Liberal Arts team, the lecturer will contribute to fostering an active culture of engagement with the BA and MA programmes, including organising and attending extra-curricular activities. The lecturer will also be asked to serve in academic administration/leadership roles as required.  

Working on multidisciplinary content development and within online teaching teams, it is expected the post-holder will contribute to the teaching and administration of key modules of the Global Cultures MA, such as:

 

•       Languages and Global Identities;  

•       Connecting Cultures: Migration and Immigration 

•       Race and Ethnicity in a Global Context;  

•       Gender and Globalisation;  

•       Advanced Research Skills;  

•       Research Project Design, and  

•       Independent Research Project. 

 

The post-holder will also be expected to play a key role in future initiatives related to the Global Cultures programme, including the development and provision of new Executive Education and Professional Development Modules, including the launch of a new module, ’Offence’, on global religion, competing belief systems and ‘culture wars’.

 

This lectureship will fall within the Academic Education Pathway, which is focused on the delivery of pedagogically-innovative education, education-related scholarship, and leadership in education. We seek applicants who can contribute to our goals of delivering exciting, inclusive, and socially-engaged education in a global context, and the ongoing diversification of our curriculum. We particularly welcome candidates who have expertise on any areas from the Global South. 

 

This post will be offered on a full-time, indefinite contract from August 2023.

 

 

Key responsibilities

• Play a role in planning, organising, designing and delivering online teaching and assessment within elements of the Global Cultures MA and its future developments;
• Develop and use innovative and effective teaching and learning techniques and resources that support the development of appropriate knowledge and skills through digital (online and technology-enhanced) delivery;
• Develop and use innovative and effective teaching and learning techniques and resources that support the development of appropriate knowledge and skills for CPD and EE modules for hybrid delivery (including some in-person, intensive workshop delivery);
• Support various academic aspects of the MA in Global Cultures, particularly in terms of assessments and marking;
• Contribute to the ongoing development, design, and enhancement of the curriculum of the Liberal Arts Department, in a manner that supports an interdisciplinary, innovative and inclusive approach to student learning and an excellent overall student experience;
• To serve as personal tutor for Liberal Arts undergraduate students, offering pastoral care and academic service;
• To undertake other reasonable duties at the request of the Director of Liberal Arts and/or the Director of the Global Cultures MA;
• To engage in scholarship that combines expertise in Global Cultures with a focus on education and pedagogy.

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

 

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1.       PhD awarded in a relevant field of expertise within Arts & Humanities and/or Social Sciences.

2.       Experience in teaching and academic administration in higher education.

3.       A track record of high-quality scholarship focused on interdisciplinary studies and/or educational inquiry/scholarship of teaching and learning, appropriate to career stage.

4.       Completion of appropriate training in and/or demonstrated engagement with equal opportunities, diversity, and inclusion and inter-cultural competencies.

5.       Excellent knowledge and understanding of subjects in the field of Global Cultures, and the ability to connect this expertise to a range of disciplines and contexts.

6.       Excellent presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills.

7.       Excellent administrative and organizational skills.

8.       Experience of teaching relevant subjects at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, with evidence of innovative, inclusive, and effective teaching, and ability to engage and inspire young and mature students.

9.       Ability to teach on two of the following topics at a Master’s level in a global context: race, gender, migration, belief and religion; cultural identity

10.     Experience of a variety of Higher Education assessment procedures and providing excellent feedback.

 

Desirable criteria

1.       Interests and experience in interdisciplinary studies with a focus on the connections between different disciplines in arts & humanities and social sciences.

2.       Experience of designing and delivering online modules in Higher Education, including to diverse, global student cohorts.

3.       Experience of designing and delivering online modules for Continuous Professional Development and/or Executive Education.

4.       Completion of appropriate training in Higher Education teaching and learning/academic practice.

5.       Experience of Liberal Arts/Interdisciplinary Education programmes.

6.       Experience of providing academic advice and pastoral support to students.
