The Language Centre at the University of Helsinki is inviting applications for  two fixed-term positions of University Lecturer in Englis

These teaching positions will focus on developing the language and communication skills of doctoral researchers at the University of Helsinki Doctoral School, which encompasses all of the University’s disciplines.  

About the posts

The posts will primarily involve teaching English graduate communication according to the needs of the Doctoral School and its multilingual researchers, both on campus and online, and will contribute to their professional skills training. In addition, some teaching may be targeted at master’s or bachelor’s students. The appointees will develop courses and teaching methods for contact, blended and online teaching, using a research-based orientation and in collaboration with the stakeholders. In addition to teaching focused on writing and presentation skills, the posts will involve the development of courses focused on other communication needs of doctoral researchers, as well as other types of language support. Administrative duties related to teaching and participation in the joint development activities of the Language Centre will also form part of the role.
 
The positions will be filled with a fixed-term contract for the period 1.8.2023–31.7.2025. There is a six-month trial period for the positions.

The persons we are looking for

The persons selected for the posts of University Lecturer are required to have  

  • an applicable doctoral degree,  (the degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline)
  • experience in teaching and
  • good overall teaching skills.

In the recruitment process, the following are particularly appreciated:

  • pedagogical training,  
  • the ability to produce study materials and  
  • the ability to apply various teaching methodologies to diverse groups of learners.

In these positions, the appointees should be experienced teachers of graduate communication in English, with experience in teaching students from various linguistic backgrounds at a high pedagogical level in university language centres or similar higher education institutions. We consider it an asset if the applicant has:

  • knowledge in a wide range of subject areas,  
  • relevant experience in teaching academic/scientific writing and presentation skills and
  • a record of conducting and publishing research.

To successfully attend to the duties of these teaching positions, the appointees should also be cooperative, flexible and interested in professional development and active participation in the Language Centre’s activities.

According to the University Decree, university lecturers must also be fluent in the Finnish language. In addition, university lecturers should be proficient in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in the Finnish or Swedish language may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application.

The University of Helsinki Language Centre is the largest language training institute in Finland and a multilingual and multicultural working community. The Language Centre provides the communication and language studies included in the bachelor’s and master’s degrees of the University of Helsinki. In addition, as its new task, it will provide graduate communication support in the Doctoral School on a full-time basis. It also offers the university community a wide range of services related to language and communication. Language courses and other services are designed and implemented in collaboration with the University's departments and their staff.

The University of Helsinki Doctoral School is a new unit at the University, the task of which is to coordinate and to develop good practices in doctoral education. It comprises 33 doctoral programmes, with a combined total of approximately 4900 doctoral researchers- 

The salary of the position is based on the salary system for the teaching and research staff at Finnish universities. The salary consists of salary elements related to job requirements and personal performance. For this position, the job requirement level is 6 and the salary will approximately be between 4000–4200 €/month at the beginning of the employment relationship.
