About Us

The Migration Hub seeks to provide the Asia-Pacific region with a world-leading venue for research and informed debate regarding human migration and mobility. The Hub is located within the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet), part of the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific. The Migration Hub seeks to understand how and why human beings move and migrate; how migration and mobility processes relate to changes in human society; and how these processes are regulated and governed around the world. To this end, the Migration Hub will convene leading experts, decision-makers and opinion-shapers across academia, policy, NGOS and industry, to share knowledge, build dialogue and partnerships, collect evidence, question assumptions, and inform bold solutions to major challenges concerning the movement of people.

The School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet) is a dynamic community of scholars from different disciplines united by our interest in governance and regulation built on principles of justice, sustainability and human well-being. The RegNet community comprises vast and diverse networks nurtured through deep and collegial engagement. We are profoundly interdisciplinary, distinguished by our intellectual drive to understand how power, ideas, values and institutions shape regulation and governance. Our approach reflects a shared commitment to pursuing a more just and equitable world.

The ANU College of Asia and the Pacific (CAP) leads intellectual engagement with the Asia-Pacific region through research, teaching and contributions to public debate, and seeks to set the international standard for scholarship concerning the region.

About the role

We are seeking a Research Fellow to make research, teaching and service contributions to the School, College and University, particularly in relation to the Professor Alan Gamlen’s four-year Future Fellowship research program, and to help drive the establishment of the Migration Hub. The Future Fellowship program is entitled ‘Mobility Shocks’, and focuses on the disruptions to human migration and mobility caused by the Covid-19 Pandemic.

This role will work closely with Professor Gamlen and the Hub team. You will be responsible for compiling the latest Australian migration data from a range of sources and analysing it using cutting-edge statistical and computational research methods, as well as developing geospational data visualisation tools to make the findings of the ‘Mobility Shocks’ project accessible and interpretable for a range of audiences. You will coordinate an annual course on migration, including all teaching, assessment and student support responsibilities.

Our ideal candidate

Our ideal candidate will have a PhD in Computational Social Sciences or a cognate discipline with a record of independent quantitative research on human migration and/or mobility. You will have experience supervising a research team, leading independent research and attracting research funding. You will also have demonstrated experience working co-operatively in a small team and working within a broader university administration and complex stakeholder network, as well as a proven ability to undertake curriculum and program development, deliver quality teaching and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students. To excel in this role, you must have superb oral and written communication skills in English and an ability to maintain a constructive and solutions-focused attitude towards identifying and solving problems with a high degree of independence.
