The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry offers international excellence in research and teaching and supports clinical service for a population of unrivalled ethnic diversity in East London and the wider Thames Gateway. The Faculty is ranked 2nd in the 2021 QS World University rankings for research citations and consistently positioned first in London for subject rankings and student satisfaction. The Faculty is organised into six Institutes, of which the Blizard Institute is one of the largest, with c400 personnel, turnover of c£50 million per annum, and research expenditure of over c£14 million per annum. The Institute is organised into four Centres; one of these is the Centre for Immunobiology which combines top-quality research and education in immunology, with particular focus on acute and chronic inflammatory disease, lymphocyte development, and the mucosal immune system.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem in many middle- and low- income countries and a constant threat in the industrialised world with 1.6 million TB-related deaths occurring globally each year. The main burden of disease in England remains concentrated in large urban areas - 40% of TB cases are found in London, with East London being one of the worst affected areas. QMUL is committed to contributing to the WHO goal of achieving TB elimination by 2050. To support this initiative, we launched the world’s first postgraduate programme that focuses exclusively on Tuberculosis in 2019 and have recently established a TB Research Group within the Centre for Immunobiology.

We now seek to appoint an exceptional individual as Professor and Honorary Consultant in Infectious Diseases. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to our mission of addressing the health needs of our local population, delivering new diagnostics and treatments on a global scale and creating a lasting real-world impact. You will join a vibrant multi-disciplinary team of academics, clinicians and researchers to lead the development and delivery of an internationally competitive research programme aimed at prevention, diagnosis or treatment of TB, and to deliver outstanding teaching which enhances student experience. You will also be expected to hold an honorary contract within the NHS and undertake clinical duties.

You will be an internationally renowned clinical academic with a significant track record of high-quality research in the field of Infectious Diseases at a national and international level, with a particular expertise in TB. You will have a record of attracting substantial research funding and the ability to develop research-led teaching and engage with a range of learning and teaching mediums. A collegiate and positive team player, you will energise and inspire stakeholders at all levels and use your first-rate people skills to mentor students and staff. Key to your success will be your ability to work collaboratively and in close partnership with clinical academics, health professionals and other key NHS partners and our wider community. You will have a commitment to the University’s values and will be able to evidence leadership in embedding the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion.
