City, University of London (City) seeks to appoint an exceptional individual as the Head of the Department of Computer Science. This is an exciting opportunity to join the School of Science and Technology at a point of significant strategic change.
The Department of Computer Science has a clear and important role to play in City’s 2030 Strategy in being the University of business, practice and the professions under the current President, Professor Sir Anthony Finkelstein. The School of Science and Technology has three Departments: Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics. The School is seeking to simultaneously appoint new Heads to all three Departments. This provides an opportunity to create a strong, collaborative Executive Team across the School. The key priorities for the School include providing an exceptional and inclusive education and experience for its students. Building synergies, shared processes and structures across the School will also be crucial.
The Department of Computer Science has some 50 FTE and 1000 students. The Department has grown considerably in recent years and is leading research and education in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, gaming, software reliability and cyber security. The Department has a long tradition of excellence in education and research and continuously improves the content of its programmes. The department benefits from City’s central London location, allowing for close ties with industry and a wide range of professional sectors, leading to one of the UK’s highest rates of graduate employability and a host of research-led enterprise opportunities.
Candidates should have a demonstrable track record of developing and delivering an innovative and inclusive education and experience for students. They will be effective people leaders, capable of leading and embedding cultural change. The School is looking for a dynamic, visionary and research active leader to inspire the Department’s outstanding academic and professional services staff. They will be collegiate and committed to working as part of an agile and inclusive School Executive Team. Experience of building links with industry and external partners would be advantageous. The Head of Department will hold a substantive appointment as a Professor and will meet the requirements for this level of appointment.
This is an excellent opportunity to have a transformational impact on the Department of Computer Science and the wider School of Science and Technology.
