The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.
We have a full-time vacancy available for a post-doctoral researcher/lecturer with the Department of Neuromedicine and Movement Sciences at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Our vision is to create world leading education and research through multidisciplinary work. The position is linked to the audiology group, with Trondheim, Norway as the place of work. We aim to facilitate inter-disciplinary dialogues in the wider field of auditory science, and therefore the position will be placed at the interface between applied audiological research and basic auditory research, facilitated by a collaboration with the Ear, Nose, and Throat department and Hearing Clinic of St. Olav University Hospital in Trondheim.
Teaching duties will be related to the bachelor programme in audiology and to a master programme in clinical health science with a specialised track in audiology.
The successful candidate is expected to be able to overcome the traditional boundaries between basic and applied research, and we are looking for an individual who shares our vision of multi-disciplinary approaches. The successful applicant will work on topics related to the research portfolio of the audiology group, with a particular focus on the interplay between vestibular and auditory processing in both health and disease.
Menière’s disease is a devastating disease for its sufferers with a significant impact on their quality of life that affects both the auditory and vestibular system. It is characterised by reoccurring attacks of vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and fullness in the ears. Traditionally, endolymphatic hydrops, an increased fluid volume in the inner ear, is considered to be the cause, but Menière’s disease pathophysiology is still far from being understood and endolymphatic hydrops may just be another symptom. We are interested in discovering this pathophysiology with the ultimate goal of a better understanding of the underlying cause and developing techniques to predict imminent attacks.
Another line of research is concerned with how infra- and low-frequency sound affects mammals, including humans, with a particular focus on how cochlear processing contributes to the often-reported annoyance of infra- and low-frequency sound.
We welcome those who bring their own creative talents and research ideas to our department. The audiology group is currently expanding its research activities, and the successful candidate is expected to have experience in the design and execution of experimental studies.
The successful applicant will report to the head of the department.
Duties of the position
- Design and execution of controlled experimental studies
- Quantitative analysis of data, including descriptive and inferential statistics
- Preparation of publications and meeting presentations
- Taking part in teaching and supervision activities (constitutes 25 % of the full-time position).
- Engage in outreach activities of the audiology group, the department, and the university
Required selection criteria
A postdoctoral research fellowship is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions.
- A Norwegian doctoral degree, or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree, recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree, in relation to audiology or related areas is required.
- Strong background in audiology or another hearing science related discipline (e.g., auditory neuroscience, psychoacoustics, otology, or audio-vestibular medicine)
- Basic experience in digital signal analysis and hardware control
- Good written and oral English language skills.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Ph.D Candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate.
Preferred selection criteria
- Experience in recruiting healthy participants and patients for research projects
- Experience in design and construction of experimental rigs
- Experience in teaching and supervising student projects
- Good written and oral Norwegian language skills
- It is essential that the successful candidate has very good collaborative skills, and the ability to work in an inter-disciplinary environment.
- Emphasis will also be placed on communicative skills, as well as personal suitability.

Salary and conditions
As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 563 500 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
The period of employment is 4 years ( with 25 % teaching duties ).
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
