Department of Geography, National University of Singapore (NUS)
Faculty Position in Tropical Environmental Change at either
Assistant (tenure track)/Associate Professor (with tenure) level
The Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is advertising a position up to the level of tenured Associate Professor in the field of Climate Science and Climate Change to join its Tropical Environmental Change (TEC) research group.
We particularly welcome applications from climate scientists with interests in climate change and climate hazards at local to regional scales, ideally with a tropical focus. Candidates should have experimental (observations) or climate modelling skills.
The focus of TEC is on the general theme of environmental change, and in particular the dynamic nature of geo-ecological processes and the human dimensions of low latitude (tropical) regimes. This focus takes advantage of our physical location in Asia and recognizes the many contributions that physical geographers routinely make in improving understanding of tropical environmental processes and their importance to global change, as well as the physiographic consequences of rapid development, land-cover transformation, and climate variability.
The Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore stands among the top Geography departments in the world and offers Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees. Although there are many overreaching and interconnecting projects and themes, our research and teaching are constituted through three groups: the aforementioned TEC; Politics, Economies and Space; and Social and Cultural Geographies.
Faculty in the Department continue to develop and shape research agendas in the global academic arena, while maintaining a strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate education. TEC members have strong collaborative relations with colleagues in cognate disciplines, particularly as part of the newly-established College of Humanities and Sciences. Recent initiatives include a taught MSc in Applied GIS and a new lab for geochemical analyses with state-of-the-art analytical equipment. NUS more widely is among the world’s most highly reputed universities and provides a generous and well-resourced environment in terms of funding and other research support. For more information on the NUS Department of Geography, please see: https://fass.nus.edu.sg/geog/.
Applicants should have a PhD in geography or an allied field with demonstrable expertise in researching and understanding complex environmental problems that affect society today. They should show promise for or already have a record of excellence in research, evidenced by high-impact publications and substantial grant capture (depending on the level of appointment), as is expected for one of the top universities in the world. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level should have obtained their PhD within the last six years. Prior teaching experience commensurate with the level of appointment is expected for tenured Associate Professor applications.
In terms of teaching and academic responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to:
- contribute to the Department’s internationally recognized research activities;
- teach a minimum of two modules a year at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, contribute to a proposed MSc in Climate Change and Sustainability, and supervise graduate students;
- perform administrative/service duties commensurate with the level of appointment.
Interested candidates should submit an application comprising: (i) a letter of interest with details of research credentials, plans for the next 3-5 years, citation index analysis (e.g. Web of Science), teaching philosophy, evidence of teaching experience and teaching feedback; and (ii) a full curriculum vitae (10 pages max.) with names and contact details of four referees. For candidates applying for the Assistant Professor position, one of the four referee names must be the name of their PhD supervisor. Candidates should clearly indicate the level of post they are applying for (Assistant or Associate Professor) in their cover letter. For full consideration, please note that only complete applications will be considered.
An internationally competitive remuneration package, including a period of subsidised housing (for non-Singaporean applicants), medical benefits and relocation expenses (where applicable), will be offered to the successful candidate. NUS also provides start-up grants, the value of which is commensurate with experience and position of appointment.
For further enquiries, please contact the Chair of the Search Committee, Professor Matthias Roth: firstname.lastname@example.org
Evaluation of applications will commence on 25 March 2023 and will continue until a suitable candidate is found. Shortlisted candidates will be notified soon thereafter, and plans will then be made for a campus visit and interview.
At NUS, the health and safety of our staff and students are one of our utmost priorities, and COVID-vaccination supports our commitment to ensure the safety of our community and to make NUS as safe and welcoming as possible. Many of our roles require a significant amount of physical interactions with students/staff/public members. Even for job roles that may be performed remotely, there will be instances where on-campus presence is required.
Taking into consideration the health and well-being of our staff and students and to better protect everyone in the campus, applicants are strongly encouraged to have themselves fully COVID-19 vaccinated to secure successful employment with NUS.
