To deepen the clinical skills and abilities in small animal medicine, the university course includes the following specialisations: Small Animal Internal Medicine (incl. subdisciplines), Small Animal Surgery (incl. subdisciplines), Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Intensive Care, Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency and Intensive Care Medicine.

The main focus of training in small animal surgery is the initial treatment of surgical emergencies and the postoperative care of inpatients.

Supervised clinical duty is organised in a rotation schedule and includes participation in daily clinic rounds with evaluation and presentation of patients. Further course contents include case documentation, case presentations, training in clinical action and decision-making skills, communication training and radiation protection training. A 1-2 week emergency course is offered at the beginning of the internship.
