Job Description

Yale-NUS College is seeking motivated candidates for a Research Assistant position in the Division of Social Sciences. This position is for a duration of one year starting in May 2023.

The successful candidate will be supporting a research project on Ports of Development: Trade Diasporas, Innovation, and 19th Century Globalization.

The Research Assistant (RA) is responsible for gathering, digitizing and measuring trade diaspora communities from 19th century census data. The research team will first focus data collection efforts on 19th century censuses from the MENA region and the British Empire. The RA will then extend the scope of the data collection to diasporas in Africa, South and Southeast Asia and Latin America.

The RA will also spearhead expanding the geographic and historical breadth of our port data. The shipping manuals cover ports from over the world. Using the same coding procedures that helped create our dataset of ports in the MENA region, we will broaden the analysis to include ports from Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. Incorporating port data from editions published between 1850 and 1914 will strengthen the reliability of our port measure.

In addition to data collection, the RA will supervise the engagement with Digital Divide Data (DDD). DDD is a digital content, data and research services provider. The Research Assistant will liaison with DDD to code an additional 2000 port-year entries.

Qualifications

  • Preferences will be given to candidates with coursework in Econometrics and familiarity with Rstudio or Stata, as well as Geographic Information Software (GIS).
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, independence and a positive attitude are a must.
