G6 MRI Research Radiographer role

We are looking for qualified diagnostic radiographers who are registered with the HCPC. You should be a radiographer with a strong aspiration to improve patient healthcare through excellence in patient care delivery and innovation in imaging technologies, with a specific drive to becoming expert in the field of MRI.  

 

Our work includes providing a clinical fetal and neonatal MRI service for patients from across South East London and national referrals from all over UK. Equally important is our strong portfolio of MRI research studies lead by world renowned researchers from the University, Hospital, and other institutions ( https://www.kcl.ac.uk/bmeis/our-departments/perinatal-imaging-health ). 

 

The Department has a dedicated imaging suite within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St Thomas’ Hospital, as well as access to state-of-the-art MRI systems within our Imaging Clinical Research Facility. These include 7T, 3T, 1.5T, 0.55T and 0.064T systems, with dedicated RF coils, positioning systems and unique image acquisition and motion correction methods used to facilitate in-utero fetal, neonatal and paediatric imaging.  

 

You should expect to perform a diverse range of advanced MRI protocols on fetal, neonatal and paediatric patients. A thorough, portfolio-focused training on both the technical aspects of MRI scanning and the principles of clinical research will be offered to the successful applicant and progression to grade 7 will be supported through mentoring by senior members of the team. 

 

Besides a minimum of one year work experience in MRI, you will need to have a proactive, ‘can-do’ attitude with a determination to succeed and develop your clinical and research skills.  

 

The post holder will be required to work flexibly between 8:00 am and 6:00pm, as requested.  Some weekend work will also be required.

Key responsibilities

 

Imaging and Research Responsibilities 

●        To work as a member of a professional team to perform excellent quality imaging studies in accordance with departmental protocols in an efficient, safe and timely manner and to contribute to the delivery of a cutting-edge clinical and research programme.

●        To participate in and take responsibility for ongoing quality assurance audits of clinical and research examinations and to be proactive in identifying and resolving problems related to image quality.

●        To be responsible for Health and Safety procedures including; to be fully aware of the potential hazards of working in an area of strong magnetic field and to be familiar with the safety guidelines issued by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). To be fully aware of the potential bio-effects of MRI and to ensure that the scanner is operated within safe limits at all times. To be familiar with safety procedures (quench, fire, cardiac arrest) which are specific to the MR environment.

●        To provide a high level of patient care before, during and after MR imaging procedures; being cognisant of the additional requirements of scanning vulnerable infants and pregnant women.

 

Operational

●        To participate in the delivery of an extended working hours and out of hours’ service as required, which may include 1-2 Saturday's a month, and 1-2 evenings a month.

●        To assist the Superintendent MRI Research Radiographer in organising the workload in line with clinical and research priorities and liaise closely with the administrative staff to ensure efficient and timely patient and volunteer throughput is achieved.

●        At all times to maintain the integrity of the data security system ensuring compliance with the Standard Operating Procedures for the data protection and Data Protection Act.

●        To be responsible for ensuring all documentation relating to imaging sequences performed and relevant clinical information are saved and recorded according to Departmental protocols.

 

Continuous Learning, Teamwork & Communication

●        To be willing to complete the learning portfolio of clinical competencies and theoretical MRI knowledge assigned by the Superintendent MRI Research Radiographer at the start of the probation period. Learning and formation will require attending training courses, seminars, conferences and to give talks and seminars.

●        Communicate effectively and maintain a good working relationship with colleagues within the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, KCL and Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

Skills, knowledge, and experience 

Essential criteria  

1.       BSc Radiography or Diploma of the College of Radiographers (DCR)

2.       HCPC registration

3.       Minimum 1 year of experience as MRI radiographer

4.       Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures relevant to MR and familiar with guidelines issued by the MHRA

5.       Be extremely diligent about achieving high quality images

6.       Effective communication in a wide range of situations in writing, person or by telephone with patients and colleagues

7.       Confident in using computers and up-to-date knowledge of imaging techniques

8.       Able to work shift patterns

9.       Adaptable to ad hoc requests of working extra hours in evening or weekends

10.     Highly organised, consistent and pays attention to detail

 

Desirable criteria

1.       Experience of working in the NHS

2.       Experience of quality assurance audits of clinical and research examination

3.       Experience in imaging infants and paediatric patients
