About the job
The proposed 2-year position (fixed starting date) at the Department of Manufacturing and Civil Engineering in Gjøvik, is linked to two European funded projects of ASEMlab (www.asemlab.no), dedicated to hydrogen storage tanks for aerospace. The successful candidate will focus on the development of an extensive cradle-to-cradle and LCA/LCC study, for new lightweight hydrogen storage tanks made of sustainable polymer composites. Through this position, you will find an exceptional portfolio of industrial and academic partners from Norway and Europe, across a variety of sectors. The successful candidate will join the Group for Sustainable Composites and will be part of ASEMlab team (Laboratory of Advanced & Sustainable Engineering Materials), led by Prof. Sotirios Grammatikos. ASEMlab is in possession of brand-new facilities for polymer composites research, covering manufacturing, testing & characterization, non-destructive evaluation, recycling as well as advanced software for design and analysis. ASEMlab-NTNU is currently the main hub for composites research in Norway, with a strong portfolio of running (national and EU) projects and ongoing collaboration with the industry. NTNU in Gjøvik is one of the new campuses of NTNU, located close to Raufoss Industrial Park, Mustad Industrial Park and Sintef Raufoss.
The successful candidate will be supervised by Prof. Sotirios Grammatikos.
Duties of the position
The position aims to:
- Develop life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost analysis (LCC) of new sustainable polymer composites used for H2 storage tanks in aviation
- Employ owned lifetime data concerning state-of-the-art polymer composites used for H2 tanks in aviation
Given the involvement in different research programs, professionality, exceptional communication skills as well as the ability to travel to project meetings and other dissemination activities, is a must.
Required selection criteria
The position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale, as well as a PhD in LCA/LCCA (see below comment for non-PhD holders). Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Ph.D Candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate.
Proficiency in English language written and communication skills is a prerequisite. The candidate is expected to be fluent in written and oral English language skills. Candidates from universities outside Scandinavia and English-speaking countries are kindly requested to document English language proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)).
TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
CAE/CPE: grade B or A.
In extraordinary circumstances, formal documentation of language skills can be relinquished. In such cases the candidate’s language skills will be assessed in a personal interview.
Preferred selection criteria
- PhD in LCA/LCCA (see below special conditions for non-PhD holders)
- strong background in cradle-to-cradle, life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost analysis (LCC) for composites
- experience with composites structural degradation will be a plus
- ambitious, proactive with a strong ability to work on problem-oriented activities

Salary and conditions
As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 563 500 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The period of employment is two years.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
The position is subject to external funding.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
