The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of a POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER to work in research projects tightly connected to Finnish CarbonAction project (www.carbonaction.org) that aims to implement the international 4permille initiative (https://www.4p1000.org/) in Finland.

The aims of the CarbonAction are to 1) design climate-smart agricultural solutions that are widely beneficial to food systems, 2) test their practical applications, 3) understand carbon (C) stabilization processes and develop a verification system for the carbon sequestration and other climate impacts to be used in policy and markets, and 4) develop economic measures and policies to promote the implementation of these solutions in Finland and abroad.

The postdoctoral researcher will join a multidisciplinary team to study soil carbon sequestration and climate impacts of agricultural practices with a strong focus on soil processes of carbon stabilization and C stock changes in different agricultural management practices. This project has tight collaboration with several national in international collaborators through the abovementioned network.

Do you want to be part in solving the questions about stable carbon in soils?

Tasks of the postdoctoral researcher will be

  1. to participate in field experiments on C sequestration both in sampling and sample preparation as well as C analysis (during the first 6-12 months)
  2. supervise assisting personnel in abovementioned tasks
  3. to analyze soil C data, report and present scientific findings, and
  4. to take an active role in group work and supervision of students to guarantee direct interplay between the experimental work and modelling. This task includes collaboration with researchers in other institutes.

We are seeking a highly motivated researcher with following requirements:

  • PhD degree in a suitable field (e.g. soil science, soil chemistry, microbiology, soil and environmental science, forest soil science)
  • proven experience in soil C analysis and willingness to utilize new tools to evaluate carbon stabilization processes
  • excellent communication, scientific writing and other presentation skills
  • publication record that shows independent writing skills and ability to publish in highly ranking international journals
  • advanced statistical analysis skills (SPSS, R or Matlab)
  • capability to work both independently and in a research team, in the laboratory and in the field
  • previous experience in supervising MSc and/or PhD students
  • ability to provide two recommendation letters confirming the abovementioned work experience. The persons signing the letters should be available for contacting (in English).

What we offer:

The salary of the postdoctoral researcher will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary of the postdoctoral researcher will be ca. 3300–3600 per month, depending on the appointees’ qualifications and experience. A six-month trial period will be applied.

The position can be filled as soon as suitable for the appointee. The duration of the employment is 24 months with a possibility to extension. The postdoctoral researcher will be positioned at the Department of Forest Sciences at the University of Helsinki.

The Department of Forest Sciences is a unit under the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, which employs circa 100 individuals. The Department conducts research of a high international standard in the forest sciences and provides the highest education based on this research. The focus areas of the Department’s research and teaching are forest ecology and forest resource management as well as forest economics, business and society.
