The University of Wollongong (UOW) is a leading Australian university with a history of outstanding achievements in teaching and learning, research and community engagement. The University is closely connected with the communities in which it operates and is well positioned to address the challenges of contemporary society and is a major driver of regional development.
The Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health (SMAH) comprises the Schools of Chemistry and Molecular Bioscience (SCMB), Earth, Atmospheric and Life Sciences (SEALS), the School of Nursing (SON), the Graduate School of Medicine (GSM, Doctor of Medicine program) and the newly created School of Medical, Indigenous and Health Sciences (SMIHS). With such a diverse science and health focus, SMAH is positioned to be a major force in connected and science-embedded education and translational science, medical and health research in Australia. Empowered by first-class teaching and driven by active research and discovery supporting its ambitions of being in the top 1% of Universities in the world, this Faculty combines the very best of science, with strong capacity for translation to our global communities’ needs and aspirations.
The School
The School of Medical, Indigenous and Health Sciences (SMIHS) brings together academics from a diverse range of disciplinary backgrounds to provide excellent educational experiences for students, and to address critical challenges facing the health of individuals, communities and populations. Our discipline groups of Indigenous Health, Medical Science, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, and Nutrition and Dietetics work together to produce health professionals who can work effectively in interdisciplinary health care teams and scientists who are ready to address key questions in health and disease.
The Role
The Head of School (HOS) leads the learning and teaching, research, governance and service agenda of the School. The HOS works closely with the Executive Dean in developing and implementing strategic and operational plans that will drive the success of the School and the wider Faculty.
The HOS is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the management and administration of School teaching programs, ensuring the maintenance of quality improvement systems and processes. They effectively coordinate all aspects of the management and conduct of research programs in the School, by liaising with Directors of Strategic Research Initiatives and Recognised Areas of Research Excellence based within the School and across the Faculty and University.
The University of Wollongong is seeking to appoint a highly motivated, energetic academic leader with an outstanding track record in research, teaching, governance and management to provide vision and leadership for SMIHS. We are seeking a HOS who is committed to achieving the very highest standards in education and research and committed to driving an interdisciplinary agenda. The appointee will be expected to cultivate a dynamic, collaborative environment that will foster excellence and innovation.
Your ability to think strategically, identify opportunities and risks, and foster collaboration will be essential in ensuring the School achieves its goals and deliver the best outcomes for students, researchers, and the wider community. You will be an excellent communicator, with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about the role of education and research in shaping the future of healthcare.
UOW offers a supportive and collaborative working environment, a competitive salary package, and opportunities for professional development and growth. You will be joining a team that is dedicated to making a real difference in the world, and that is committed to creating a better future for healthcare.
