ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

The Faculty of Medicine and Health is the largest faculty in the University. This integrated faculty brings opportunity for innovation, progressive thinking and challenging the status quo by establishing productive research units that cross traditional academic school and discipline boundaries. We operate across four large health precincts (three metropolitan and one regional/rural) where University facilities are co-located with hospitals and medical research institutes. The faculty has an extended reach in Asia through longstanding on-ground partnership projects.

The Sydney Institute for Infectious Diseases is dedicated to solving two of the greatest global challenges of our time -emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance. Its vision is to reduce the health and socioeconomic consequences of infectious diseases in the region by translating its work into public and health practice and policy. Formerly known as the Marie Bashir Institute, and relaunched as the Sydney Institute for Infectious Diseases - or Sydney ID - the Institute is one of only six Flagship research centres in the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding academic at the level of Professor as Director, Sydney Institute for Infectious Diseases who can provide research leadership and set the strategic direction of the institute. The role requires a collaborative leader who can foster a culture of research excellence and support inclusive decision making. The Director will work to unify the teams that comprise the Institute, ensuring Sydney develops a reputation for world-class expertise in infectious disease research.

The successful candidate will:

  • be a leading authority with an international reputation for excellence in a discipline relevant to the institute's research themes
  • be expected to maintain your reputation by actively contributing to research and scholarship, academic debate, policy development and innovation within the University and the broader community
  • hold a PhD or equivalent higher research degree in a relevant academic field
  • be sufficiently advanced in their career and prepared to take on the demanding role of coordinating the institute's different disciplines, bringing them together to fully harness the University's expertise in infectious disease research
  • have a demonstrated capacity to speak to a variety of audiences, with ability to communicate to and influence a variety of stakeholders
  • have an understanding of the higher education sector together with experience in a large operational institute which brings together multiple disciplines
  • have demonstrated experience solving large scale problems with a translational focus.

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a 5-year fixed-term position on a full-time basis, subject to completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.

Visa sponsorship and relocation assistance will also be provided if required.

4.         Sydney Conservatorium of Music Campus. In Macquarie Street, central Sydney.

5.         Rozelle Campus. Home to Sydney College of the Arts.

6.         Surry Hills Campus. Home to the Faculty of Dentistry.

7.         Camden Campus. Contains facilities connected to the Faculty of Veterinary Science and the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment.
