Applications are invited for a Lectureship in Physical Geography (Quaternary Science) in the Department of Geography, Royal Holloway University of London.

The successful applicant will join a department with an outstanding reputation for its teaching and student support, with some of the very strongest ratings for student satisfaction (NSS) in the UK. They will be dynamic and enthusiastic with the ability to inform and inspire students, and a strong commitment to excellence in teaching. The Department has a strong community ethos, and mentoring and further training will be available to the successful candidate. In 2018 the Department was awarded the Athena SWAN Silver Award from the Equality Challenge Unit, recognising exceptional commitment and excellence in the advancement of gender equality. The successful candidate will engage with and extend the work of the Department’s Centre for Quaternary Research (CQR). The CQR is one of the most significant clusters of expertise in Quaternary Science in the UK, and has played a leading role in shaping understanding of past climates and environments. The CQR has a close working relationship with other universities and major research and cultural institutions. The CQR has run a very successful MSc programme in Quaternary Science for over 20 years, and many major figures in the specialism have been trained at Royal Holloway.

Applicants should demonstrate appropriate expertise in Physical Geography and an ability to contribute to teaching at undergraduate level and on the MSc in Quaternary Science. We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with expertise in palaeoecology, landscape dynamics and geochronology. We welcome willingness to engage with impact-related activities either individually or as part of a larger group. Potential teaching areas include contributions to first or second year undergraduate courses; a final year option module; first-year undergraduate tutorials in Physical Geography; a first year residential field trip; and postgraduate teaching on the MSc in Quaternary Science.

In return we offer a highly competitive rewards and benefits package including generous annual leave and training and development opportunities. The post is based in Egham, Surrey where the College is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance from London.

The successful applicant will join one of the UK’s strongest Geography Departments, situated with the School of Life Science and the Environment, with research specialisms in not only Quaternary Science but also cultural and historical geography, geopolitics and security, development and environmental justice. High scores in the National Student Survey (88% overall satisfaction in 2022) are combined with research excellence, with the Department ranked 5th in the UK in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. The Department has excellent laboratory facilities including dedicated facilities for luminescence dating, palaeoecology, thin section work, tephrochronology and microscopy, as well as digital facilities for GIS and other forms of analysis and visualisation.
