BC-72 PhD: Surface emitting laser based optical transceivers

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

The III-V Materials and Devices Group at Tyndall National Institute Institution and University College Cork have a fully funded open PhD position, sponsored by Intel, to develop highly integrated optical transceivers featuring surface emitting lasers. The group is a well-established research team of 20 people with extensive expertise in semiconductor photonic devices and their integration. We are seeking well-qualified and highly self-motivated applicants to apply for this position.

Key Responsibilities and research objectives

Photonic devices are pervasive featuring in high bandwidth communications, sensors, lighting, photovoltaics and medical diagnostics. Based on these applications there is a demand for ever higher performance with reduced energy consumption in smaller footprints. To address these issues at Tyndall we are developing tiny vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and photodetectors (PDs) in a manner that permits their intimate integration with electronics allowing for their use in data communications and in 3D sensing. The research activities cover the design and realization of photonic devices, their heterogeneous integration, characterisation and application. The successful applicant will carry out independent and innovative research that will lead to high-impact publications while working within a research team developing advanced semiconductor photonic devices. We encourage applicants with additional interest in electronic circuit design.

Other responsibilities

  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the required Health and Safety standards.

Essential Criteria

  • First or upper second-class honors degree in Physics, Materials Science, Electronic Engineering, or similar with educational experience of Semiconductor Materials and/or Devices.

Desirable Criteria

  • Master s degree in photonics or electronics showing first class achievements

The fully-funded PhD position includes a stipend of 18,500/year for up to four years or graduation (whatever comes first) and full coverage of academic fees/tuition (approx. 5,500/year) in addition to extensive training opportunities.
