The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a PhD Fellowship in Petroleum Technology with the topic Machine Learning-based approach to 3D geological interpretation at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Energy Resources.The position is vacant from 01.08.2023.
This is a trainee position that will give promising researchers an opportunity for academic development through a PhD education leading to a doctoral degree.
The hired candidate will be admitted to the PhD program in Science and Technology. The education includes relevant courses amounting to about six months of study, a dissertation based on independent research, participation in national and international research environments, relevant academic communication, a trial lecture and public defence. The appointment is for three years with research duties exclusively.
The position is funded by a NORCE-led KPS-K project called 3D-GIG: 3D geological interpretation for geosteering of wells, which was spun off from SFI DigiWells: Digital Well Center for Value Creation, Competitiveness and Minimum Environmental Footprint.Research topic
The PhD Fellow will be affiliated with the following research project "3D-GIG: 3D geological interpretation for geosteering of wells.
3D-GIG is a competence building project for business supported by the Research Council of Norway and industry partners, including Aker BP, ConocoPhillips, Equinor, Lundin Energy, TotalEnergies, V r Energi and Wintershall Dea. This project is a collaboration with the University of Texas at Austin. During this project, we expect to have some research exchange.
The main objective of 3D-GIG is to is to establish and verify a workflow for automatic, real-time, around-borehole assembly 3D geological interpretation of logging while drilling logs, including deep sensing borehole electromagentic logs, for optimal well placement decision support while drilling. This workflow prepares the ground for future automatic updating of standard probabilistic 3D well-scale sector geomodels. The approach obviates the need for manual management of geomodels during the real-time phase.
3D-GIG expands the traditional manual geological interpration to an automated one and will be implemented into 3D well geosteering workflow for managing and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing safety while drilling.
In the project, the PhD student will work together with researchers from UiS and NORCE and contribute to the overall workflow. The PhD project will concentrate on the evaluation of machine-learning models for 3D geological intrepratation.
Machine learning has the potential to effectively extract complementary and hidden information from the measurements in an objective manner. If suitable machine learning methods can be developed and trained using the full range of geological configurations that can be encountered along the well, their output while drilling can advise subsurface experts in their interpretation.
The main goal is to develop a machine learning-based methodology and algorithms for automatic interpretation of geological features around borehole assembly as drilling progresses.Project proposal
As an applicant, you must prepare a preliminary project proposal for a doctoral project within the subject area, which explains the problem, relevance, theoretical and methodological approach. Your preliminary project proposal will be included in the application assessment.
During the first three months of the employment period, the project proposal and progress plan will be further developed in cooperation with your supervisors and completed for the final plan for the PhD-project. A project proposal template can be found here.

We are looking for applicants with a strong academic background who have completed a five-year master degree (3+2) within a topic related to the energy transition including geoscience, geophysics or petroleum engineering, statistics, machine learning and which includes skills in modelling and programming, preferably acquired recently; or who possess corresponding qualifications that could provide a basis for successfully completing a doctorate.
To be eligible for admission to the doctoral programmes at the University of Stavanger both the grade for your master s thesis and the weighted average grade of your master s degree must individually be equivalent to or better than a B grade. If you finish your education (masters degree) in the spring of 2023 you are also welcome to apply.
Applicants with an education from an institution with a different grade scale than A-F, and/or with other types of credits than sp/ECTS, must attach a confirmed conversion scale that shows how the grades can be compared with the Norwegian A-F scale and a Diploma Supplement or similar that explains the scope of the subjects that are included in the education. You can use these conversion scales to calculate your points for admission.
Emphasis is also placed on your:
- motivation and potential for research within the field
- professional and personal skills for completing the doctoral degree within the timeframe
- ability to work independently and in a team, be innovative and creative
- ability to work structured and handle a heavy workload
- having a good command of both oral and written English
A good proficiency in English is required for anyone attending the PhD program. International applicants must document this by taking one of the following tests with the following results:
- TOEFL Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-Based Test (IBT). Minimum result: 90
- IELTS International English Language Testing Service. Minimum result: 6.5
- Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) from the University of Cambridge
- PTE Academic Pearson Test of English Academic. Minimum result: 62
