The Surrey Centre for Cyber Security within the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Surrey is seeking to recruit a full-time researcher/senior researcher.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research in the area of secure systems. The area of focus will be systems architectures and formal verification and the application area of interest is primarily systems that require the provision of authentication and attestation. Passwordless authentication is growing in popularity, with mobile devices increasingly providing native support.  There are interesting research challenges when users have access to a plethora of devices and how such technologies provide seamless authentication across devices in a robust way that is resilient to the recovery of users’ identity credentials. There is also the proliferation of IoT devices and there are interesting authentication and attestation challenges when these devices move through supply chains or form collections of devices.

The post holder will benefit from the research environment provided by the Surrey Centre for Cyber Security, an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research recognised by the National Cyber Security Centre. The Centre’s research focus is on the design and analysis of security protocols, data privacy, privacy preserving security, applied cryptography, and a range of cyber security topics.

The post will also offer an excellent opportunity for a researcher/senior researcher to develop his/her own research agenda within the area of secure systems and to work collaboratively in a team of applied cryptographers, system architects, system developers and colleagues that can support evaluation of systems from a useable security perspective. It will also provide an excellent opportunity to influence research directions during the course of the appointment. The successful candidate will work under the direction of Professor Helen Treharne together with the support of other colleagues within the research centre and industry collaborators. Researchers with an interest in theoretical and formal aspects of secure systems are encouraged to apply.  Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant subject.

If the successful candidate is appointed as a Research Fellow B, the minimum salary offered would be £44,414 per annum.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£34,314) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will then increase to a competitive level.
