About the job
A PhD Candidate position in the field of materials science with a focus on ferroelectric thin films for ICT and health applications is available. The successful candidate will be affiliated to the FACET research group at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at NTNU and work in a multidisciplinary and international environment. Our group is internationally renowned for its research on inorganic ferroic materials, covering materials modelling, synthesis, and multiscale characterization. Additional information about the research group can be found here. The PhD research fellow will be a part of a strategic project funded by NTNU’s Rector to promote excellence in science.
The tasks for this PhD candidate will cover all aspects from thin film processing over crystal structure and microstructure characterization to testing of the functional properties of prototype thin film devices. Advanced characterization methods such as transmission electron microscopy and in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction will be used to clarify the structure property relationships. A combination of experimental and modelling techniques will be used to optimize the thin film characteristics. For the position as a PhD candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.
Duties of the position
The PhD candidate will be involved in in the development of materials to lay the ground for utilization of our aqueous chemical solution deposition method in device technology. . The PhD student will plan and conduct experiments according to the project objectives with support from the supervisors and the FACET-team. The experimental work includes deposition of thin films, their characterisation using advanced methodology, and testing of prototype device structures. DFT modelling will be included to facilitate film optimization. The results of the project are expected to be published in scientific journals and at national and international conferences.
Required selection criteria
- You must have a professionally relevant background in materials science and engineering, nanotechnology, materials chemistry or materials physics.
- You must be familiar with inorganic materials synthesis and characterisation techniques, e.g., X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.
- Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program in Materials Science and Engineering, Materials Chemistry or equivalent, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level.
- You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
- Master students who expect to complete their studies by summer 2023 are encouraged to apply. Employment will then be postponed until the Master's degree is finished.
