Position Overview

KU is seeking a highly motivated Post-doctoral Fellow to work on the development of photonic based sensing devices for biomedical applications. The work will mainly focus on the development of wearable structures to be applied in rehabilitation scenarios, and in the development of the necessary ML algorithms to analyze the sensors data, evaluate the physical rehabilitation process and infer on the physical rehabilitation path to be adopted.

As part of the project, the researcher will have access to state-of-the-art research equipment and facilities at the Biomedical Department and HEIC and will get an opportunity to work alongside researchers and graduate students from various backgrounds as part of a wider team.

Position Requirements

  • Development of novel sensing photonic based sensing structures to monitor physical parameters, such as torsion, range of mention, temperature and force.
  • Evaluate the sensing structures encapsulation, for wearable configurations (biocompatible, comfortable, resilient and accurate) 
  • Development of cost effective, portable interrogation devices.
  • Develop machine learning algorithms in using features extracted from wearable photonic sensors for reliable evaluation for the physical rehabilitation processes.
  • Validate ML models and evaluate model performance.
  • Submit the Ethics applications for approval from Khalifa University and Clevaland Clinic Ethics Committee.
  • Regularly meets with the Advisor to evaluate the research results, for the development and troubleshooting of techniques, to provide direction and focus to the research;
  • Publishes research results in high impact journals appropriate to the field in a timely manner;
  • Participates in writing grant applications and proposals that pertain to the research;
  • Contributes to the overall activities of the research team as required;
  • Mentors graduate students and/or undergraduates under the supervision of the Advisor;
  • Adhere to the University's information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • PhD from a reputable university in the fields of Electrical/Biomedical/Physics/Computer Engineering or related discipline or experience suitable to the tasks to be implemented.
  • Experience writing scientific or review papers;
  • A willingness to contribute to a collaborative and supportive team culture
  • Excellent English language communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • The proven ability to work on multiple tasks with competing demands and deadlines.
  • Ability to train and mentor students and support fellow researchers
  • Highly developed reasoning and problem-solving skills

Desired Criteria

  • PhD gained from a top 200 QS or THE ranked University
  • Relevant experience as a researcher in academia or in industry.
  • High impact first-author publications in top 10% journals in the relevant field
