The Department of Physical Electronics at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University provides courses and guarantees fundamental and applied research in the fields on plasma physics, plasma applications including deposition of thin films by PVD and nanotechnology. It has a tradition of more than 50 years.
The R&D Centre for Plasma and Nanotechnology Surface Modifications (CEPLANT) was established in 2010 as part of the Department of Physical Electronics and was funded by the European Structural Funds and has been recognized by the European Union as a Key Enabling Technologies (KET's) centre. CEPLANT is also included on Roadmap of Large Research Infrastructures of the Czech Republic. CEPLANT boasts a rich network of cooperating institutions in the world. Cooperation with colleagues in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Hungary is expected within the proposed position.
The postdoc will work at the PVDlab, which is a part of the CEPLANT centre. The project focuses on the deposition of coatings of high entropy alloys and high entropy ceramics by magnetron sputtering and their further complex analyses by methods available at the centre (SEM, EDX, XRD, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, nanoindentation) as well as by methods available at cooperating institutions within Europe (TEM, tribological properties, thermal and oxidation stability,…). The current focus is on materials for machining and materials for green, efficient energy storage in Li-ion batteries and hydrogen fuel cells. The project is, therefore, in the border area between Physics, Materials Chemistry and Engineering sciences. The main content of the work will be basic research, and we expect cooperation with an industrial partner on up-scaling in a later phase. The specific topic will be chosen by the candidate’s background and by the goals of projects that are currently under review by different funding agencies.
- To choose the deposition conditions and independently carry out the depositions by magnetron sputtering
- To measure the properties of the coatings, analyse the data and use them as feedback for establishing further experiments
- To publish the research outputs
- To propose and develop new areas of research within the research group
Skills and Qualifications
The applicant must have:
- Ph.D. Degree in Physics, Materials Chemistry, Engineering or in nearby scientific fields
- Experience in preparation of thin films or coatings, materials characterization, and previous publications in peer-reviewed journals. Experience in nanostructured and high-entropy materials are an advantage.
- Good communication skills (oral and written) in English
