About the Doherty Institute, Department of Microbiology and Immunology
The Department of Microbiology & Immunology is one of the departments within the School of Biomedical Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.
The Doherty Institute is a world-class institute combining research in infectious disease and immunity with teaching excellence, reference laboratory diagnostic services, epidemiology and clinical services. It is a joint venture between the University of Melbourne and Melbourne Health.
A new, purpose-built building for the Doherty Institute was completed in early 2014. The members of the Doherty include the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit Public Health Laboratory of the University of Melbourne, the Victorian Nosocomial Infection Surveillance System, The Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory, The Victorian Infectious Diseases Service, and The World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza.
About the Role
The Research Officer will join the research program of Professor Jason Mackenzie where they will participate in a research program that aims to formulate and construct norovirus virus-like particles (VLPs) that are expressed from mRNA, in combination with other approaches, as potential vaccine candidates. This project will include the use of various pre-clinical animal models to investigate the production of neutralising antibody and define their potency during virus infection in cell culture.
The candidate will be responsible for initiating new areas of investigation and develop the current programs under investigation within the Mackenzie lab and with scientists at Moderna.
- Under the guidance and support of Senior Academic staff conduct internationally competitive research, resulting in publications in high impact journals.
- Contribute to and publish academic papers and other scholarly outputs to a high academic standard in accordance with the research expectations of the University of Melbourne.
- Actively participate in research seminars and conferences to disseminate research findings as opportunities arise.
- Contribute to the preparation, or where appropriate individual preparation of research proposal submissions to internal or external funding bodies as relevant.
- Contribute to scientific mentoring and supervision of students.
You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated by presentation of research results at conferences, internal forums and through manuscript submissions. You will also have experience in using initiative, working with minimal supervision and ability to prioritise tasks to achieve project objectives within timelines.
You will also have:
- A PhD or close to PhD completion in virology and/or immunology.
- Substantial experience in cell culture-based virus infection.
- Experience with molecular biology/virology.
- Demonstrated ability to expertly apply research methodologies and quantitative/qualitative data analysis.
- Sound knowledge of biosafety issues in handling infectious agents.
