The Department of Chemistry offers world class education for undergraduate and postgraduate students, consistently being rated amongst the best in the UK. The Department accepts some 180 undergraduate students per year on the 4-year MChem course and around 100 postgraduate students per year on various taught and research postgraduate courses. The teaching is provided by about 90 academic staff, including a number of staff dedicated to practical teaching in the Chemistry Teaching Laboratory.
We have an exciting opportunity to appoint an Associate Head of Department (Teaching) & Director of Studies to maintain the overall vision of the undergraduate course and to take a proactive and leading role in identifying areas for development, assuming executive responsibility to drive forward agreed changes. They will also maintain a strategic overview of graduate studies in the Department.
This postholder will contribute to the formulation of wider departmental strategy and will be responsible for maintaining a strategic view of the Chemistry teaching programme. Full details of the post can be found in the job description.
The post reports to the Head of Department for academic matters and to the Head of Administration for administrative and organisational matters and is supported by a Deputy Director of Studies.
The successful applicant will hold a doctorate in Chemistry with a track record of excellence in one or more of the following: education, teaching, teaching management, and/or course development gained in Chemistry at university level in a world class Chemistry department. They will have clear leadership skills and evidence of achieving significant objectives and delivering change through others, taking a proactive approach to initiate actions and follow them through to conclusion. They will possess excellent judgement and interpersonal skills to influence staff and students. They will demonstrate high level organisational skills, with the ability to manage a broad range of jobs simultaneously and under pressure.
This is a permanent position with an expected start date of October 2023. This is a full-time role but allows the post-holder to carry out additional teaching up to a maximum of six hours per week for which additional remuneration will be paid. The post is located at the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, South Parks Road, Oxford.
