PMcC-19 Post doctoral Researcher Integrated Magnetics: Device and Material Characterization

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

Established in 2004, the Tyndall National Institute is one of Europe s leading centres in ICT research and development. It hosts over 460 researchers, engineers and support staff. It has a network of over 200 industry partners and customers worldwide. Tyndall performs breakthrough research in photonics, electronics, micro/nano-technology and smart systems to deliver innovative solutions in the communications, energy, medtech, bio-pharmaceuticals, agricultural and the environmental sectors.

Integrated Magnetics Group

The Integrated Magnetics group performs world leading research in thin film magnetic material systems, their associated processing techniques and magnetic component design. These components are appropriate for creating highly integrated power systems, capable of efficiently operating at frequencies up to 100 MHz. The magnetic components which include inductors, coupled-inductors and transformers are the basis of next generation Power-System-In-Package (PwrSiP) and Power-System-On-Chip (PwrSoC) solutions. The group s activities have very strong commercial relevance with Research and Development partners spanning the world s major component suppliers, silicon foundries, wafer-level assembly houses and SoC manufacturers.

The group is both industry and research focused. Consequently, high impact, high quality Journal and Conference publications are a key objective for the group.

Key Responsibilities

This Post-Doctoral Researcher role will involve the test/characterization of advanced integrated magnetics devices, on-silicon or in a laminate package. The successful candidate will be an important part of a highly motivated team aiming to achieve excellent research results that extend the boundaries of know-how in the area of high-frequency power magnetics. The researcher will be a key team member working closely with magnetic material scientists, fabrication research engineers, and integrated power systems designers.

The electrical characterization of integrated magnetic devices (such as inductors, coupled inductors, or transformers) will include the use of instruments such as Impedance Analysers to measure inductance and resistance and Vector Network Analysers to extract S-parameters, which are post-processed to yield inductance, coupling factor, device capacitances, and resistance values. The characterization of integrated magnetic devices also includes large-signal testing a key expertise that the Integrated Magnetics group is famous for.

The successful Researcher is expected to have expert domain knowledge in various electrical characterisation equipment and post-processing methodologies used. The researcher is also expected to learn and become an expert in designing appropriate test circuit boards for device characterization under high-voltage high-current switching ambiance. Further, they will be required to become conversant with the characterization of magnetic/dielectric materials.

Compliance with Tyndall s Quality Management System-based Health and Safety standards is a natural aspect of the role.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD in Electrical, Electronic, Physics, Materials Science, or related discipline
  • Good understanding of the operation of passive electromagnetic devices
  • Experience in the electric/electronic testing of inductors, capacitors, and switches
  • Experience in high frequency characterisation of electrical components/modules
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
