Department: Department of Geography (30900)
Categories: Senior Research Staff & Post-doctoral Fellow
Applications are invited for appointment as Post-doctoral Fellow (PDF) in modelling the boundless carbon cycle in the Department of Geography (Ref.: 519668), to commence as soon as possible, on a one- to two-year temporary basis, with a possibility for further extension depending on performance.
Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in geography, biogeochemistry, environmental sciences, or a related discipline. They should demonstrate (i) experience and interest in biogeochemical modelling of the boundless carbon cycle and greenhouse carbon emissions, i.e., models that aim to represent processes and quantify the fluxes of carbon between terrestrial biosphere, geosphere, atmosphere, and aquatic ecosystems; (ii) computer programming skills and knowledge of machine learning methods for spatial-temporal analysis. Experience in biogeochemical and/or environmental modelling including simple coding in Python, Fortran, R or other high- level languages is required; (iii) a good physical understanding of terrestrial and aquatic carbon cycle. An interest or experience in field or laboratory studies of some aspects of the carbon cycle is desirable; and (iv) a strong track record of high-quality research as indicated by publications.
The appointees will undertake research in the following topics, such as aquatic carbon export modelling, assessment of greenhouse gas emission from inland inlands, future carbon cycle modelling, and sensitivity analysis for climate change. They will supervise junior research staff and students, and assist in administrative, operational and other duties as assigned. Information about the Department can be obtained at https://www.geog.hku.hk. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.
The University only accepts online application for the above post. Applicants should apply online and upload an up-to-date CV and the contact information of three referees. Review of applications will start as soon as possible and continue until December 31, 2023, or until the posts are filled, whichever is earlier.
