This is a Senior Lecturer appointment, equivalent to Associate Professor in North American universities.

About the School of Physics

The University of Melbourne's School of Physics is one of Australia's leading Physics Schools. It has achieved this status through the high quality of its research and teaching programs. The School offers a wide range of physics subjects to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and performs research in the following areas: Astrophysics, Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, Experimental Condensed Matter Physics, Experimental Particle Physics, Materials Science, Physical Biosciences, Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics and Theoretical Particle Physics.

The School also plays a major role in the Australian Synchrotron research program, and in the development of the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory.

About the Role

As part of the University initiative in quantum computing, the School of Mathematics and Statistics and School of Physics are seeking to make a joint appointment of an outstanding academic to the position of Senior Lecturer in Quantum Computation.

The successful candidate will undertake high-level research of exceptional promise in mathematical and theoretical aspects of quantum computing and quantum software development, and support existing and new industry links in this fast-moving area.

In addition to providing leadership within the research area, the successful candidate will develop collaborative links within the Schools and across the University as well as externally, and secure competitive research funding in line with the strategic direction of the Schools, manage existing and new large-scale research projects in quantum computing and attract graduate researchers of high caliber.

The incumbent will provide outstanding teaching support and academic mentorship within the Schools’ undergraduate and MSc programs, preparing lectures, practicals and field work programs in quantum computing, and contributing to the development of high quality, innovative subject material. They will demonstrate a commitment to the supervision of research students at undergraduate, MSc and PhD levels.

The position will be housed in either the School of Mathematics and Statistics or the School of Physics as best supports the successful candidate’s primary research interests.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting research that contributes to the Schools’ strategic research priorities in the broad area of quantum computing
  • Significantly contributing to research projects including leadership of research teams or management of projects where applicable
  • Engaging with internal and external collaborators, including Faculty of Engineering and IT, Faculty of Business and Economics, other universities, local government and industry partners
  • Contributing to a range of administrative functions, including those connected with teaching responsibilities and the conduct of the academic affairs of the Schools

About You

You will be a highly qualified and motivated individual, capable of growing research and teaching opportunities in the general area of theoretical quantum computing, and demonstrate the ability to provide national leadership within your field.

You have an excellent track record of high-quality research and publication in leading international journals, and the ability to attract competitive research funding from varied sources including industry.

Your excellent interpersonal skills and exceptional written and verbal communication allow you to establish collaborations and engage with a broad range of researchers nationally and internationally. While your experience in successfully teaching at university level will ensure that you deliver high quality support to students at undergraduate and graduate level.

You will also have:

  • A PhD in a relevant area of quantum computing, quantum information, mathematics and/or physics
  • A track record of success in teaching at university level, the ability to teach large undergraduate classes, and the ability to develop and teach relevant discipline subjects at a graduate level
  • A demonstrated capacity to conduct research activities in collaboration with industry and/or government
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and to contribute to the organisational development of the Schools, Faculty and the University as a whole.
