The School of Humanities and Social Sciences in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Greenwich is seeking to appoint an Associate Professor in Applied Linguistics and Spanish. We have a strong interdisciplinary ethos and the School prides itself on the support provided to students throughout their studies, enhancing their knowledge, skill set, confidence and employability.

We are looking for an Associate Professor and Academic Portfolio Leader to provide leadership of learning, teaching and research activity in Applied Linguistics and Modern Foreign Languages. The successful candidate will be expected to teach on our English Language and English Language Teaching and English Language and English Literature undergraduate programmes, on our MA Applied Linguistics (TESOL) and on our Spanish as a foreign language modules. 

The role of the Academic Portfolio Lead is for an initial three years; after this period, the successful candidate can return to the Associate Professor role with different responsibilities and workload. The role holder's period of office may be extended beyond this initial three-year period subject to outstanding performance and review.

They will also be expected to provide operational leadership and line management for the applied linguistics and modern foreign language programme teams, to lead curriculum development of our undergraduate and postgraduate provisions and contribute to the successful delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. 

Candidates should have expertise in one or more of the following areas: Second Language Acquisition; Language Teaching, Material Development and Language Testing; Spanish as a foreign language; Research Methods.

The successful candidate should contribute to the Faculty Research and Knowledge Exchange Institute and related centre(s) and to the Faculty and University strategies, helping to develop our national and international profile whilst expanding activities related to community and public engagement. They will have strong stakeholder relationships at regional, national and international levels in the discipline, and should have expertise which complements and extends our current provision.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD degree in Applied Linguistics or a relevant discipline, Postgraduate teaching qualification, or equivalent and a Minimum of Fellow of HEA or significant teaching experience.

We are seeking a proactive, enthusiastic individual who is committed to excellence in teaching, research and student support, to lead the dedicated Applied Linguistics and Foreign Languages programme teams. Candidates must have excellent communication skills and experience of successfully delivering high-quality teaching.
