Birmingham Institute of Creative Arts wishes to appoint a Professor of Digital Arts to join the leadership team of our successful School of Games, Film and Animation (GFA). This exciting role provides an opportunity to play a pivotal role in contributing to our innovative undergraduate and postgraduate teaching portfolio and developing cutting-edge research initiatives in areas such as games design, film, data analytics, animation, and immersive technologies.

Our recent Periodic Review recognised an ambitious practice-led interdisciplinary vision, which builds on our 180-year history rooted in the original Birmingham Government School of Design, the UK’s first municipal Art School. It has the highest approval ratings for student satisfaction across the university for Teaching, Assessment and feedback and academic support, and hosts a thriving interdisciplinary research community, founded on principles of interdisciplinary practice and innovation. It has a wealth of partnerships across the creative and cultural sector and the longest running Trans-National Education partnerships in the faculty. 

With a recognised international research profile, you will be considered a leader in your field of study, with evidence of your contributions to the professional practice/research of your specialism. You will be a capable leader with the ability to motivate and enthuse others, possessing demonstrable experience of managing a research community, utilising innovative approaches to facilitate teaching and learning and research. With an extensive professional background working at a senior level, you will be capable of developing and writing research proposals and funding bids, demonstrating a proven record in acquiring significant external funding. 

Principal duties: 

• Lead and develop internationally recognised collaborative and personal research. 
• Lead on developing external funding applications. 
• Disseminate research findings nationally and internationally. 
• Contribute to the university’s research environment, including playing an active leadership role in one of our research clusters.
• Supervision of PhD students and contribute to the design and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. 
• Develop and manage academic and industry networks. 

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate: 

• Proven excellence in research (essential).
• A track record in submitting and securing external funding (essential).  
• Considerable experience and expertise in designing and delivery taught programmes and supervision of doctoral research (essential).
• Experience of research leadership (essential). 
• Membership of relevant subject associations and research networks.
• Experience of mentoring academic staff.

Our academic staff are eligible to enrol in the Teachers’ Pension, a Defined Benefit scheme that includes guaranteed benefits for life, including the option of a tax-free lump sum at retirement and life cover of three times your salary.   We recognise the value a great pension can have for our employees, and we make a 23.68% employer contribution.   Your personal monthly contributions will vary between 7.4% and 11.7%, depending on your salary. We also give all staff a 32-day annual leave allowance, in addition the 8 public and bank holiday days.

Based in the heart of England, the city is easily accessible by road, rail and air. Birmingham New Street station has recently undergone major redevelopment, while the city is at the heart of the high-speed rail network, HS2.  HS2 will provide new rapid rail travel connecting Birmingham City Centre to London and the rest of the network from the new Curzon Street Station – adjacent to Birmingham City University’s City Centre Campus – and will be one of the most environmentally friendly stations in the world.
