The Centre for Business in Society (CBiS) at Coventry University is now one of the largest and most successful research centres focusing on responsible business. We are committed to helping to facilitate a better gender balance in the Boardroom and amongst C-suite executives, so we are providing fees-only bursaries for women candidates. The Centre is home to over one hundred doctoral candidates and to our professional doctorate programme the DBA, which is aimed at practicing senior executives. We are offering three PhD and four DBA fees-only bursaries.

CBiS’s research looks at the impact of business and policy on society across a number of research teams. Our research teams are interested in the circular economy, sustainability and supply chains; in the digital economy, big data and data security/privacy; green economic growth, entrepreneurship and new business models; responsible personal finance, the exclusion of individuals and groups in society and the legacy of infrastructure investments in mega events; and much more. https://www.coventry.ac.uk/research/areas-of-research/business-in-society/.

The PhD bursaries being offered are for exploring :

  • Consumer digital vulnerabilities and financial wellbeing in the cost-of-living crisis
  • The UK surplus food landscape: Surplus food as a long-term solution to food poverty
  • Net Zero and rural business: The viability of exploiting emergent green technologies in marginalised communitie

Within the DBA programme, we explore aspects of business strategy, brand strategy and marketing strategy; organisational structure, behaviour and corporate dysfunctionality; personnel effectiveness, human resources and talent management; operational functionality, supply chains and commercial ecosystems; internationalisation, networks and commercial relationships; ethics, consumption and sustainability; big data, decision-making and effective use of data; cyber resilience, data protection and surveillance.

The bursaries and entry requirements differ between the DBA and PhD programmes, reflecting the nature of DBA programmes, that candidates undertake their doctorate part-time alongside working in senior roles, and our expectations that impactful change will result in a candidate’s organisation as a result of the DBA. Our PhD programme is more theory-based than the practice-led DBA, blending conceptual development with empirical research, typically appealing to candidates who have recently completed a Master’s degree. The CBiS PhD programme is available by full-time and part-time study.

Details of our PhD programme are here: https://www.coventry.ac.uk/research/areas-of-research/business-in-society/study-with-us/phd-study/.
